From 6 to 18 May 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering organised a BIM Management – BIM Manager training course for GIZA Vietnam Design and Construction JSC. The 16-hour course was delivered to the company's engineers and project management staff.

The course aimed to develop within the company a team capable of planning BIM, organising project data and controlling the quality of models across all disciplines. In this way, BIM is applied according to a consistent process, rather than each design team implementing it in its own way.

The training programme was developed as a condensed version of the Institute's BIM Manager course programme. Its content was reorganised to fit 16 hours and to suit an organisation engaged in both design and construction.

Training programme content

1. General introduction

  • An overview of BIM: concepts, benefits and the main applications of BIM in construction projects.
  • BIM standards and implementation guidance in Vietnam, together with the BIM requirements set out in the construction decrees currently in force.

2. Management of the building information model

This is the core component of the course, presented in the sequence of steps a BIM Manager follows when establishing BIM on a project.

  • BIM execution planning. An overview of the project BIM Execution Plan (BEP).
  • Selection of BIM uses. Selecting the BIM applications appropriate to the scale and requirements of each project.
  • BIM roles. Defining the responsibilities of the BIM Manager, the BIM Coordinator and the modellers.
  • Detailed BIM workflows. Establishing the processes for exchanging, checking and approving models.
  • Common Data Environment. Establishing a Common Data Environment (CDE): using Autodesk Construction Cloud (Docs, Build) for project data management, and Autodesk Viewer and Drive for storing and navigating models.

3. BIM model requirements and checking

  • Checking the architectural model.
  • Checking the structural model.
  • Checking the MEP, plumbing and fire protection models.
  • Checking drawings and quantities produced from the model.

4. Organisation of the BIM model

  • Checking how project files are divided.
  • Checking coordinates and project orientation across models.
  • Checking naming rules and colour conventions.

5. 3D coordination

  • Using Navisworks Manage to manage clashes and identify design errors between disciplines before the construction stage on site. Through a practical coordination workflow, participants gained a clear understanding of the purposes of Navisworks, beyond its function as a model viewer.

Training methodology

Throughout the course, each participant was provided with an individual workstation. The lecturer's presentations were combined with practical work on models and on the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform. Model-checking topics were illustrated with errors commonly found in design and construction documents, in line with the day-to-day professional work of the GIZA team.

The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering sincerely thanks GIZA Vietnam Design and Construction JSC for its confidence in selecting the Institute as its training provider.
