The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering has organised a dedicated BIM Manager training course for IKCONS Construction Joint Stock Company. The participants were the Company's engineers, technical staff and project management personnel. The sessions were held at the Company's office.
Course objectives
The course aimed to develop personnel at IKCONS capable of understanding and directing the BIM process at project level. This task corresponds to the role of a BIM manager, which includes establishing information management rules, controlling the models of each discipline and ensuring that all parties coordinate according to a single plan.
Training programme content
The programme was developed on the basis of the Institute's BIM Manager course syllabus and adapted to the needs of IKCONS. The content is organised around the regular tasks of a BIM manager rather than around the functions of individual software packages.
The programme comprised five main areas:
- BIM planning. Analysing the client's information requirements and reviewing the project's BIM Execution Plan (BEP).
- Information management. Organising a Common Data Environment (CDE), including role-based permissions, naming conventions, and submission and approval procedures.
- Multi-discipline model coordination. Federating architectural, structural and MEP models; verifying coordinate systems; organising 3D coordination and tracking clashes until they are resolved.
- Quality control. Verifying models against the required LOD and LOI using a structured checklist.
- Coordination between parties. Managing issues, requests for information (RFIs) and design quality reports between the client, consultants and contractors.
Training methodology
The Institute's lecturers are directly engaged in managing and implementing BIM on projects. Each topic was therefore presented in connection with situations that arise in the participants' work, such as a contractor submission with incomplete information, models of two disciplines with inconsistent levels, or a design change that must be communicated to all parties.
This approach enables participants both to understand the process framework and to apply it to the Company's projects. Upon completion of the course, the team shares a common understanding and a consistent terminology for BIM work. This provides a basis for the Company to standardise its internal procedures progressively.
Cooperation between the University, the Institute and industry
The cooperation between Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering and IKCONS Construction JSC contributes to bringing BIM technology into production practice. The Company gains personnel qualified to manage BIM, while the University and the Institute receive feedback from construction sites to update their training programmes.
The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering sincerely thanks IKCONS Construction JSC for its confidence in selecting the Institute as a partner in its digital transformation, towards modern methods of managing and delivering construction projects.
