From 21 to 24 June 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering delivered a BIM Management (BIM Manager) course for the Quang Tri Provincial Department of Construction. The 16-hour course ran over four sessions in Dong Ha City, Quang Tri Province.

The programme focused on the capabilities a managing body needs when it receives projects delivered with BIM: understanding the legal framework, organising a common data environment, reviewing each discipline's information model and overseeing coordination between the parties involved.

The syllabus was adapted by the Institute from its BIM management programme for engineers and managers: two sessions of core knowledge followed by two hands-on sessions on models.

Course content

Session 1. BIM fundamentals and the execution plan

The course opened with an overview of BIM and the terminology found in project documents. Participants were introduced to the uses of BIM, the role of each party (client, consultant, contractor), and the benefits and challenges an organisation faces when it adopts BIM. The session went on to cover the BIM environments, platforms and tools in current use; Vietnam's legal documents, standards and guidance for BIM implementation; and how to prepare a BIM execution plan for a specific project.

Session 2. Common data environment (CDE) and model requirements

Participants managed project data in Autodesk Construction Cloud (Docs, Build), covering:

  • setting up storage folders and member permissions;
  • submitting, reviewing and approving 3D models and 2D drawings;
  • tracking RFIs and construction progress;
  • producing reports from project data.

Autodesk Viewer and Autodesk Drive were also introduced as tools for storing and quickly viewing models. The second half of the session set out model requirements by level of development (LOD): how to review architectural, structural, and MEP, plumbing and fire-protection models, and how to check drawings and quantities extracted from a model.

Session 3. Organising the BIM model (hands-on)

On a sample model, participants checked how a project is split into a master file, files per building block and files per discipline, and worked with Worksets for team collaboration. These separate files are brought together through linking discipline models in Revit. Participants also practised checking the coordinate system (survey coordinates and true north) and the naming and colour conventions used in the model.

Session 4. Coordination and clash resolution (hands-on)

The final session covered the 3D coordination process: building a clash matrix between disciplines, combining discipline models into a coordination model in Navisworks, managing Search Sets, detecting and resolving clashes, and exporting the results as reports.

Teaching approach

The course moved from core knowledge to practice. The first two sessions gave participants the legal framework, the execution plan, the common data environment and the criteria for reviewing models. In the last two, participants checked model organisation themselves and ran a multi-discipline coordination workflow, so they could apply what they learned directly to managing projects that use BIM.

The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering sincerely thanks the Quang Tri Provincial Department of Construction for choosing the Institute as its training provider.
