The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering is responsible for the BIM – Revit training component of the Work in Japan project, a programme that prepares Vietnamese technical professionals to work for companies in Japan. The partnership was signed on 18 December 2015 by IIC, the Vietnam–Japan Institute of Advanced Technology (VJIAT) and Nippon Structural Engineering Co., Ltd. (NKE).

Participants are final-year students, young engineers and architects who intend to work in Japan, many of them graduates of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering. The Institute developed the curriculum with input from Autodesk experts in Japan, so that the content reflects how Japanese design offices use BIM in practice.

Signing ceremony

The signing took place in the meeting room of Building A1, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering. The signatories were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Anh Binh, Director of IIC; Dr. Nguyen Hoang Giang, Director of the Vietnam–Japan Institute of Advanced Technology; and Mr. Katsushige Susuki, President of Nippon Structural Engineering Co., Ltd.

Under the agreement, IIC designs the programme, delivers the teaching and ensures that participants meet the required BIM – Revit skill level before they leave to work in Japan.

Training objectives

In Japan, designing on a building information model is now standard practice: all parties work on one three-dimensional model that carries data, which reduces errors between disciplines. The programme therefore sets two requirements for participants:

  • to deliver a project in Revit on their own, from modelling and information management to issuing a drawing set;
  • to work in a multidisciplinary team, coordinating architectural, structural and MEP models under a single BIM workflow.

Programme content

The programme is organised in six parts. It builds on the framework of the Revit Architecture course and was extended to meet the partners' requirements.

Part 1. Overview. BIM technology; BIM execution planning, processes and guidelines (BIM Execution Plan, BIM Guideline, BIM Process, BIM Tools); getting started with the Revit interface.

Part 2. Modelling building elements. Grids and levels; the Project Base Point and Survey Point; terrain (Toposurface, Building Pad); foundations, columns, beams and floors; walls, windows and doors; curtain walls, roofs, railings and ramps.

Part 3. Project setup and management. Project Information; snaps and Project Units; materials and Object Styles; line styles, line weights and 2D line patterns; view settings (scale, Detail Level, Visibility/Graphics, Discipline, View Range, Crop View, Temporary Hide); Manage Links; Project and Shared Parameters; the Project Browser.

Part 4. Families. How families work in Revit; creating families for architecture, structure and MEP.

Part 5. Management and coordination. Project Phases; Design Options; linking Revit and IFC files; connecting to Navisworks Manage.

Part 6. Detailing and documentation. Rooms and room tags; callouts; schedules and quantities; title blocks; rendering; printing and exporting documents.

Lecturer

The programme is taught by Dr. Nguyen Manh Tuan, a BIM specialist at IIC.

Alongside the classes, the project organised activities that connect participants with employers and with current industry technology, including the Work in Japan Job Fair in Hanoi on 28–29 January 2016 and the seminar "Applying specialist construction software", held by Hanoi University of Civil Engineering and IIC on 18 February 2016.

Significance of the programme

Participants who complete the course receive a certificate from the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering. Beyond BIM – Revit skills to Japanese industry requirements, the programme helps participants pursue work abroad, improve their language skills and become familiar with Japanese working culture.

For the University and the Institute, the programme is an opportunity to benchmark BIM training against the needs of international employers and to gather direct feedback from recruiters to improve the curriculum.

The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering sincerely thanks the Vietnam–Japan Institute of Advanced Technology and Nippon Structural Engineering Co., Ltd. for their partnership in this project.

Companies and organisations wishing to arrange BIM – Revit training to their own standards, including programmes that prepare staff to work with overseas partners, are kindly invited to contact the Institute on +84 989 427 809 or +84 914 388 841.
