On 20 and 21 June 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering delivered an Infrastructure BIM training programme for managers and engineers of Vietnam Infrastructure Development and Finance Investment Corporation (VIDIFI). The 16-hour programme was held at the corporation's head office on the 8th floor of the Lilama10 Building, 56 To Huu Street, Trung Van Ward, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi.

As an investor and manager of infrastructure projects, VIDIFI aims to strengthen the information management capability of the staff who oversee its projects. The programme therefore focused on BIM management skills from the client's perspective: setting requirements, controlling model quality and coordinating the parties involved.

Training programme content

The content was based on the Institute's BIM Manager course for infrastructure and arranged into two intensive days:

  • Day one – foundations and information management: BIM on infrastructure projects, BIM uses across investment stages, the role of the client; the common data environment (CDE), permissions, submission and approval workflows; level of development (LOD) requirements for transport works.
  • Day two – organising and coordinating models: splitting models by discipline (roads, bridges, MEP, landscape), agreeing the project coordinate system; building a clash matrix and checking clashes on the federated model.

Linking the training to the client's work

Alongside model management procedures, lecturers presented the direct benefits an infrastructure BIM model brings to project management. On the cost side, a road model allows station-by-station earthwork volumes to be calculated in Civil 3D, so the client can check quantities directly on the model. On the schedule side, the model can be linked to the construction programme for 4D simulation in software such as Synchro 4D, supporting the monitoring and management of progress across work packages.

Participants attended both days in full, practised on their own laptops and discussed with the lecturers the situations they encounter in managing their projects.
