Between May and June 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering delivered an Infrastructure BIM course for the Phu Xuyen District Construction Investment Project Management Board. The 16-hour course was held at the Board's office.
The course aimed to equip the Board's staff with knowledge of information management and BIM model control on infrastructure projects such as roads, water supply and drainage, and site grading. Compared with building projects, infrastructure BIM has its own characteristics in terms of long linear extents, survey coordinate systems and coordination across many engineering disciplines.

Training programme content
The programme was based on the syllabus of the Institute's BIM Manager course for infrastructure and covered the following main areas:
- BIM foundations for infrastructure. The concept and place of BIM in the infrastructure sector, specialist terminology, BIM uses across project stages and the roles of the parties involved.
- Data management and model control. Setting up a common data environment (CDE) for infrastructure projects, permissions and member management, submission and approval workflows; LOD-based assessment criteria for road works.
- Organising and structuring the BIM model. Splitting the overall model from discipline models (roads, bridges, MEP, landscape), setting up team working and the project's survey coordinates.
- Model coordination and clash resolution. The clash matrix, the 3D multi-discipline coordination sequence and building federated models in Navisworks to detect and resolve clashes.
Training methodology
The programme focused on the project management board's role in the BIM process: receiving, checking and coordinating models produced by consultants and contractors. Discipline models for infrastructure such as roads and drainage are typically built in specialist software such as Civil 3D and then federated in Navisworks for review and coordination. Participants practised on the federated model of an urban development, learning how infrastructure models are assessed and managed in practice.
The Institute sincerely thanks the Phu Xuyen District Construction Investment Project Management Board for choosing it as its training partner.
