From 15 to 29 August 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering delivered a 16-hour online course in Infrastructure BIM. Participants were managers and engineers from four groups of companies:

  • Phuc Loc Group and its member companies;
  • Civil Engineering Construction Corporation No. 8 (CIENCO 8) and its member companies;
  • Gia Hung Investment and Development JSC;
  • Mien Trung Construction Group.

The participating organisations play different roles in the infrastructure project chain, from investors and urban developers to transport works contractors. The programme was therefore designed so that each group of participants would understand how infrastructure BIM models are created, controlled and used in their own part of the work.

Training content

The programme followed the syllabus of the Institute's BIM Manager course for infrastructure, reorganised for online delivery:

  1. BIM on infrastructure projects: terminology, BIM uses at each investment stage and the responsibilities of investors, consultants and contractors.
  2. Common data environment (CDE): folder structure, permissions, model submission and approval workflows; level of development (LOD) requirements for transport works.
  3. Organising discipline models: splitting road, bridge, MEP and landscape models; agreeing the survey point and project coordinate system.
  4. Coordination and clash checking: building a clash matrix, federating multi-discipline models and detecting clashes in Navisworks.

Online learning on a real-world model

Lecturers taught live on the federated infrastructure model of an urban development, including underground pipe networks, street lighting and roadside trees. Using this model, participants followed how a road model is put together: designing the alignment in Civil 3D from the centreline, combining it with the profile and typical cross-section to build the corridor as a 3D road model, and then federating it with other disciplines to check clearances and crossings between underground services.

The online format allowed organisations based in different provinces to join a single class without staff travel, while participants could still discuss questions directly with the lecturer in every session.

The Institute sincerely thanks Phuc Loc Group, CIENCO 8, Gia Hung Investment and Development JSC and Mien Trung Construction Group for choosing it as their training partner.

Organisations wishing to arrange infrastructure BIM training, on site or online, are kindly invited to contact the Institute on +84 989 427 809 or +84 914 388 841.
