From 9 August to 9 September 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering delivered an Infrastructure BIM course for managers and engineers of Trung Chinh Trading and Construction Co., Ltd. The 16-hour course was held online via Zoom.

As a construction company, Trung Chinh aims to apply BIM on infrastructure works, from receiving design documents to organising construction. The course therefore covered both the management process for infrastructure BIM models and how to read and use the outputs produced from a road model.

Training programme content

The programme was built from the Institute's BIM Manager course for infrastructure and covered:

  • BIM on infrastructure works: concepts, terminology and BIM uses at each project stage.
  • Project data management: the common data environment (CDE), permissions, submission and approval workflows; level of development (LOD) requirements for roads.
  • Organising the road model: splitting models by discipline and by road section, agreeing the coordinate system, managing the corridors of each work item.
  • Coordination and checking: federating models, building a clash matrix and checking clashes in Navisworks.

Using the drawings produced from the road model

Part of the course was devoted to the outputs of a road model in Civil 3D. Working on a road with several corridors, participants learned how a Civil 3D profile is built from the existing ground and the design grade line, and how cross-sections are generated in batch to read cut and fill areas at each station. When the model changes, these drawings update with it — the fundamental difference between documentation produced from a BIM model and drawings prepared by hand.

The online format allowed participants to follow every step on the lecturer's screen and ask questions directly in each session.

The Institute sincerely thanks Trung Chinh Trading and Construction Co., Ltd. for choosing it as its training partner.

Organisations wishing to arrange infrastructure BIM training, on site or online, are kindly invited to contact the Institute on +84 989 427 809 or +84 914 388 841.
