From 8 March 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering delivered a training course in Tekla Structures for MTSC Thang Long Steel Structure Co., Ltd. The course comprised 15 sessions totalling 30 hours and was held at the company's head office in Thuong Tin District, Hanoi.
MTSC Thang Long Steel Structure Co., Ltd. operates in the field of structural steel. The training programme was therefore designed around the workflow of a steel fabricator: modelling steel buildings, modelling connections and preparing a drawing set for cutting, drilling, welding and erection in the shop. In the first session, participants received an overview of the Tekla Structures software. The subsequent sessions consisted of continuous practice on two sample buildings.
Course details
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Course | Tekla Structures |
| Client | MTSC Thang Long Steel Structure Co., Ltd. |
| Duration | 30 hours, 15 sessions |
| Start date | 8 March 2025 |
| Venue | Company head office, Xam Duong Village, Ninh So Commune, Thuong Tin District, Hanoi |
The programme was developed on the basis of the Institute's Tekla Structures course. After each session, participants were assigned a homework exercise, numbered B1 to B13, to practise independently on their own computers.
Training programme content
Session 1. Introduction
- Tekla Structures and the course content; installing the software; standards, roles and licensing.
- Creating, saving and opening models; navigating: zooming, panning, rotating.
- Modelling steel members (columns, beams, plates, bolts, welds) and concrete members (footings, columns, beams, slabs, walls).
- Snapping modes and the selection toolbar.
- Grids: creating, editing and generating views.
Stage 1. Standard steel building – exercise T01 (sessions 2–6)
Session 2. Detailed modelling. Steel columns and beams with full parameters, materials, orientation and levels; using the copy, move, split and combine commands to build the model efficiently.
Session 3. Connections. Column bases, beam-to-column and beam-to-beam connections; copying connections to identical locations.
Session 4. Reinforced concrete. Footings, beams, ties, columns and column stubs with their reinforcement; advanced cutting tools.
Session 5. GA drawings. Model filters, part numbering, title blocks; 3D, plan, elevation and section drawings; dimension, text and display settings; using Clone to copy drawing properties.
Session 6. Assembly drawings. Creating assembly drawings, setting dimensions, text and display, and copying assembly drawing properties. These drawings form the core of the steel shop drawings produced in Tekla that the shop uses for fabrication.
Stage 2. Pre-engineered steel building – exercise T02 (sessions 7–14)
Session 7. Modelling a pre-engineered building. Importing AutoCAD drawings into Tekla as a base; modelling tapered built-up columns, built-up rafters and the required connections; guidance on using the PEB tool.
Session 8. Purlins and roof. Z and C purlins; purlin connections, sag rods and purlin bracing; bracing, roof monitors and portal bracing; roof sheeting.
Session 9. Platforms. Working platforms and checker plate flooring.
Session 10. Stairs and railings. Steel stairs and railings.
Session 11. GA drawings for the pre-engineered building. Filters, numbering, 3D, plan, elevation and section drawings to a standard template.
Session 12. Assembly drawings and quantities. Assembly drawings to a standard template, with the bill of quantities placed on the drawing.
Session 13. Single-part drawings. Plate drawings for the cutting operations in the shop.
Session 14. Printing and quantities. Printing, setting line weights for CAD and PDF export; exporting member quantities; managing phases and copying from other models; sharing models through Trimble Connect and Autodesk Viewer.
Session 15. Final assessment
Participants take a test to be awarded a certificate of course completion.
Training approach
Exercises T01 and T02 correspond to the two building types most commonly encountered by a steel structure company: the standard steel building and the pre-engineered steel building. In each exercise, participants complete the entire workflow, from modelling members and connections to preparing GA drawings, assembly drawings, single-part drawings and the bill of quantities. Upon completing both exercises, the technical team of MTSC Thang Long is able to prepare a complete fabrication package for the company's actual projects.
The Institute sincerely thanks MTSC Thang Long Steel Structure Co., Ltd. for its trust in selecting the Institute as its training provider.
Steel structure companies wishing to arrange Tekla Structures training for their technical staff are kindly invited to contact the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering at +84 989 427 809 or +84 914 388 841. The Institute will use the type of structures the company fabricates as the basis for the practical exercises.
