The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering has delivered a private BIM Manager course for IKCONS Construction Joint Stock Company. The participants were the company's engineers, technical staff and project management personnel. The classes took place at the company's own office.
The aim was to give IKCONS people who understand and can run the BIM process at project level: the person who sets the rules for information, keeps every discipline's model under control and makes sure all parties work to the same plan.
What the course covered
The programme was built on the Institute's BIM Manager course syllabus and adapted to IKCONS's needs. It follows the daily work of a BIM manager rather than the menus of a piece of software.
Participants worked through five main areas:
- BIM planning. Reading the client's information requirements and reviewing the project's BIM Execution Plan (BEP).
- Information management. Setting up a Common Data Environment (CDE): role-based permissions, naming rules, submission and approval workflows.
- Multi-discipline model coordination. Federating architectural, structural and MEP models, checking coordinates, running 3D coordination and tracking clashes until they are resolved.
- Quality control. Checking models against the required LOD and LOI with a structured checklist.
- Coordination between parties. Managing issues, RFIs and design quality reports between client, consultants and contractors.
Linking knowledge to real work
The Institute's lecturers manage and implement BIM on live projects. Each topic is therefore set in a situation the participants know well: a contractor submission with missing information, two disciplines' models at different levels, a design change that every party has to pick up.
This lets participants learn the process framework and apply it straight away to the company's projects. After the course the team shares one understanding and one vocabulary for BIM work, which is the foundation for standardising the company's internal process step by step.

University, Institute and industry working together
The cooperation between Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, the Institute and IKCONS Construction JSC helps bring BIM into day-to-day production. The company gains staff able to manage BIM, and the University and the Institute receive feedback from site to keep the training up to date.
The Institute thanks IKCONS Construction JSC for choosing it as a partner in the company's digital transformation towards modern ways of managing and delivering construction projects.
