The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering worked with THACONS General Construction Contractor JSC to deliver a BIM Manager course for the company's engineers, technical staff and project management personnel.
Unlike many company classes held at the client's office, this course ran on campus at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering. Each participant had a workstation in the University's computer lab, so theory and hands-on model work went together in the same session.
What the course covered
The programme was built on the Institute's BIM Manager course syllabus and adapted to the work of a general contractor. It focused on what a BIM manager actually does on a live project:
- BIM planning. Writing and reviewing the BIM Execution Plan (BEP): goals, each party's role, level of detail and the model delivery schedule.
- Information management. Setting up a Common Data Environment (CDE) with naming rules, permissions and approval workflows.
- Multi-discipline model coordination. Federating architectural, structural and MEP models, running coordination meetings and tracking clashes until they are resolved.
- Data quality control. Checking models against the required LOD and LOI before every handover.
- Streamlining coordination. Shortening the loop between designers, the general contractor and subcontractors with one agreed process.
Lecturers with hands-on BIM delivery experience
The course was taught by specialists who train and deliver BIM on live projects. Alongside current BIM standards, participants heard lessons from large projects across Vietnam: where BIM tends to stall once it reaches site, and what to do when the parties do not yet share one process.
For a general contractor, the BIM manager is the link between the design model and the work on site. The article What is a BIM Manager explains the role in more detail.
University, Institute and industry working together
The course is the result of cooperation between Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, the Institute and THACONS General Construction Contractor JSC in developing a highly skilled workforce. It supports wider use of BIM and digital transformation, and stronger capability in managing and delivering construction projects to modern standards.
The Institute thanks THACONS General Construction Contractor JSC for choosing it as a training partner.
