On 7 and 8 May 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering delivered a BIM Management – BIM Manager course at the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank) – Human Resource Training and Development School. The course comprised 16 hours, with one day of theory and one day of practice.

The client for this course is the training school of a bank, rather than a design or construction firm. This indicates that knowledge of BIM is relevant not only to organisations within the construction industry but also to organisations involved in investment projects.

The programme was based on the Institute's BIM Manager course and condensed to fit a two-day schedule.

Day One: Theory (8 hours)

Overview of BIM

  • An introduction to BIM and related terminology.
  • Applications of BIM technology.
  • The parties involved in applying BIM on a project.
  • Benefits and challenges of BIM for an organisation.
  • BIM environments, platforms and tools.
  • Legal documents, standards and BIM implementation guidance in Vietnam.
  • Preparing a BIM execution plan for a project.

Establishing a common data environment

This module guides participants in setting up a Common Data Environment (CDE) for a project on the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform (Docs, Build), including:

  • Storing project data and managing members.
  • Submitting and approving 3D models and 2D drawings.
  • Managing RFIs and construction progress.
  • Exporting reports.
  • Using Autodesk Viewer and Drive to store and navigate models.

Requirements for the information model

Participants are guided in assessing whether a model meets the level of development (LOD) required by the project, specifically:

  • Reviewing the architectural model.
  • Reviewing the structural model.
  • Reviewing the MEP, plumbing and fire protection models.
  • Checking drawings and quantities produced from the model.

Day Two: Practice and Q&A (8 hours)

Organisation of the BIM model

  • Checking how project files are divided: the overall file, files for each building block and files for each discipline.
  • Teamwork with worksets.
  • Checking the project coordinate system and orientation: survey coordinates and the true north of the building.
  • Checking naming rules and colour conventions.

Coordination and clash resolution

  • Preparing a clash matrix between disciplines.
  • The 3D coordination process and the creation of a federated model.
  • Managing search sets.
  • Detecting and resolving clashes and exporting reports.

Course structure and training approach

The programme was structured according to the two main groups of tasks of a BIM manager. The first day focused on the requirements of BIM adoption, including regulations, implementation planning, the common data environment and model requirements. The second day placed participants in the role of a model reviewer. Participants worked on an actual model, checked file division, coordinates and naming rules, and then carried out coordination and analysed clash reports.

The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering sincerely thanks VietinBank – Human Resource Training and Development School for placing its trust in the Institute as its training provider.

Organisations, including those outside the construction industry, that wish to provide BIM training for their staff are kindly invited to contact the Institute at +84 989 427 809 or +84 914 388 841. The Institute is prepared to adapt the programme to each organisation's role in projects.
