From 21 May to 21 June 2025, the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) – Hanoi University of Civil Engineering organised a Revit Structure training course for GIZA Vietnam Design and Construction JSC. The course comprised 30 hours of instruction and was intended for the company's structural engineers.
The course was held in parallel with the Revit Architecture course that the Institute delivered to GIZA over the same period. The company organised its design staff by discipline: architects attended the architectural track and structural engineers the structural track. This arrangement is consistent with the recommendation in the article Revit Architecture, Structure or MEP: which to learn, which advises learners to choose a track according to their job role and to study in depth the track related to their day-to-day professional work.
Course details
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Course | Revit Structure |
| Client | GIZA Vietnam Design and Construction JSC |
| Duration | 30 hours |
| Dates | 21 May 2025 to 21 June 2025 |
| Venue | 4th floor, Building N01 – T5, Diplomatic Corps Area, Xuan Tao Ward, Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi |
The training programme was developed on the basis of the Institute's Revit Structure course and is arranged in the sequence used to prepare a set of structural design documents: modelling, developing the foundation family library, concrete detailing, reinforcement detailing and scheduling.
Training programme content
Part 1. Basic setup
- An introduction to BIM and Revit.
- Setting file paths, getting to know the interface, setting keyboard shortcuts.
- Creating grids and levels.
- Rotating the project to true north.
Part 2. Structural elements
- Modelling structural columns, beams and floors.
- Modelling pile caps and piles.
- Modelling masonry walls.
- Managing visibility when working in a model with many elements.
Part 3. Family library
Following a general introduction and a presentation of the massing tools through worked examples, participants develop the structural families commonly used on projects:
- Isolated footing, pile cap and strip footing families.
- Concrete stair flight families.
- Structural beam and column families.
Part 4. Concrete detailing
- Pile and pile cap setting-out plans.
- Column setting-out plans.
- Structural floor plans.
- Detailed sections.
- Managing the project browser.
Part 5. Reinforcement detailing
This part covers the content that distinguishes Revit Structure from the other Revit tracks.
- The Rebar and Area Reinforcement tools.
- Using shared parameters, view templates and filters to manage and present reinforcement.
- Reinforcement details for foundations, beams and columns.
- Slab reinforcement details, produced with the Area Reinforcement tool following the method described in the article on slab reinforcement in Revit.
- Stair reinforcement details.
Part 6. Schedules and title blocks
- Concrete schedules: beams, columns, slabs, foundations.
- Reinforcement schedules: beams, columns, slabs, foundations.
- Creating title blocks and printing.
Significance of the training course
For a design firm, Revit Structure allows concrete and reinforcement quantities to be determined directly from the model. When an engineer changes a beam section or a bar spacing, the detailed drawings and schedules are updated accordingly, without the need for manual recounting. For this reason, the course devotes nearly half of its duration to concrete and reinforcement detailing.
The Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering sincerely thanks GIZA Vietnam Design and Construction JSC for its confidence in selecting the Institute to deliver both Revit tracks to its design team.
Companies wishing to arrange Revit Structure training for their structural engineers are kindly invited to contact the Institute at +84 989 427 809 or +84 914 388 841. The practical exercises will be based on the type of buildings the company designs.
