Detailed Crossed Section: detailed long sections of beams and columns in Revit

Detailed Crossed Section was developed by the RDSIC Centre at the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC). Select a beam or column and the section mark that runs along it, and the tool builds a detailed long section with full rebar tags, dimensions and levels, laid out the way structural drawings present them.

What Detailed Crossed Section does

Beam and column long sections with rebar tags in one click

Long sections take the most effort when detailing beam and column rebar: you crop the view, tag each bar group, dimension the spans and anchorage lengths, and mark the storey levels. Detailed Crossed Section does this on a section mark you have already placed.

  • Crop the section view to fit the selected element
  • Tag longitudinal bars and stirrups by mark, quantity, diameter and spacing
  • Dimension spans, supports and bar segment lengths
  • For columns: show each storey level and break the column at each storey
  • Works for continuous multi-span beams and multi-storey columns
  • Each run handles one element; run it again for the next section
Long section of a continuous beam over grids A, B and C after running the tool: longitudinal bars, stirrups and span dimensions are annotated.
Scope

Two element types, one command

The tool detects whether the element is a beam (Structural Framing) or a column (Structural Columns) and lays out the section to match.

  • Beams

A long section through the spans, with tags for top bars, bottom bars and stirrups in each segment, and span dimensions between grids.

  • Columns

A long section of the column through the storeys, with tags for longitudinal bars and stirrups, storey height dimensions and level marks.

  • Licence registration

The Licensed button on the ToRD tab opens the registration dialog. The Help button opens the ToRD Manual supplied with the installer.

Workflow

Creating beam and column long sections with Detailed Crossed Section, step by step

1. Installation and registration

  • Download the installer for your Revit version (2017, 2018 or 2019) from the Download section and install it.
  • Open Revit, go to the ToRD tab and click Licensed.
  • Fill in your full name, phone number, email, organisation and position; in the Version box select Detailed Cross Section.
  • Send these details with the code in the Key box to the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC). The Institute checks them and sends back the activation details.
The Registration dialog: Detailed Cross Section is selected in the Version box; the Key box holds the machine code to send to the Institute.

2. Place a section mark along the element

On the structural plan, place a Section mark running along the beam axis, or through the column in the direction you want to show. The element must contain rebar (Structural Rebar).

3. Run the command

  • On the ToRD tab, click Detailed Cross Section.
  • Select a beam or column. If you pick any other element, the tool reports You must choose beam or column!
  • Select the section mark placed in step 2.
  • Wait for the tool to finish, then open that section in the Project Browser to check the result.
Click the Detailed Cross Section button on the ToRD tab to start.
After selecting the column, select the section mark that passes through it.
