Drag Rebars: rebar shape details on Revit drawings
Drag Rebars was developed by the RDSIC Centre at the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC). Select a bar in a section and drag it to an empty spot: the tool draws the bar shape as a separate detail, dimensions each segment and labels the bar mark, quantity, diameter and length. When the rebar in the model changes, one button updates the detail.
Rebar in the model becomes a bar-shape detail on the drawing
Reinforcement drawings in Vietnam usually include bar-shape details: each bar is drawn separately next to the section, with every segment dimensioned for fabrication on site. Revit has no built-in way to show this. Drag Rebars creates the detail from the bar in the model itself, so the figures always match the schedule.
- Drag main bars and stirrups out of a longitudinal or cross section
- Dimension each bar segment, rounded to the step you set
- Bar labels with up to four parts, P1–P4: bar mark, quantity and diameter, length, steel grade or total length
- Six built-in label styles: RDSIC, HBC, VLAD, VLAD Tomas, Daniele, Patricio
- Show or hide label text for all details or only the selected ones
- Update labels and detail shapes after you edit the rebar in the model
Five commands on the Structure panel of the ToRD tab
Drag Rebars is the main command. The others manage label text and keep details in step with the model.
-
Drag Rebars
Select a bar in the view and pick a placement point. The tool draws the bar shape there with dimensions and a label.
-
Visible · Invisible
Show or hide the text on details. Choose Yes to apply to all details, No to apply only to the selected ones.
-
Reset Comment · Reset Detailed
Update the labels, or redraw the detail shape, after the bar in the model has changed.
-
Settings
Choose the label style, the P1–P4 content, units, rounding step, scale, text size and custom hook length.
Six ways to label a bar, chosen in Settings
Each label style has up to four positions, P1–P4. In the Settings dialog, pick the style in the Type box, then assign a rebar parameter to each position, for example Rebar Number, Quantity, Bar Diameter, Bar Length, Material.
| Style | Example |
|---|---|
| RDSIC | ① 3Ø18 L=5.80 PC52 |
| HBC | 1 13M (1) / 91000 |
| VLAD | ① 1 13M / 9400 |
| VLAD Tomas | ④ Ø12 (B500B) /2080 mm -6ks |
| Daniele | 3Ø20 L=(3000) - (1000) |
| Patricio | 2Ø18 L=1000 (950+50) |
Detailing beam rebar with Drag Rebars, step by step
1. Install and register
- Download the installer for your Revit version (2019, 2020 or 2021) from the Download section and install it.
- Open Revit, go to the ToRD tab and click Licensed. Fill in your details and choose Drag Rebars in the Version box.
- Send your details and the code in the Key box to the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC) to receive activation.
2. Set up the label style
- Click Settings. In the Type box, choose a label style; the preview beside it shows positions P1–P4.
- Assign a parameter to P1, P2, P3 and P4.
- Set Unit, the Round step, Scale and Text Size (mm). Click Update size if you change the text size.
- Click OK. The settings are saved for next time.
3. Drag a bar out of the section
- Open the longitudinal or cross section that contains the rebar to detail.
- Click Drag Rebars and select a bar.
- Pick a placement point in an empty area of the view. The bar shape is drawn there with each segment dimensioned and a label in the chosen style.
- Repeat for the other bars. Drag stirrups out of the cross section.

- Edit the rebar in the model as usual.
- Click Reset Comment to update the label text, or Reset Detailed to redraw the detail shape.
- Use Visible or Invisible to show or hide the text on details as needed.
