Modify Rebar: cut, lap and extend rebar in Revit
Modify Rebar, developed by the RDSIC Centre at the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC), puts the rebar edits most often done by hand on the ToRD tab: cut many bars at once with an automatic lap splice, extend bars to a reference plane or an element face, and stretch bar ends by a fixed length.
Edit many bars at once without redrawing them
In Revit, cutting a long bar into two lapped pieces, or extending a bar end to the edge of a beam, means editing the sketch of each bar. Modify Rebar does this for the whole group of selected bars and redraws them with the same bar type, hooks and concrete cover of the host element.
- Cut many bars at a reference plane and add a lap splice of the length you enter
- Pick the lap side with a single click on screen
- Extend bars to a reference plane (To Reference)
- Extend bars to the face of another element (To Face)
- Stretch bar ends by a fixed length entered on the ribbon (default 500 mm)
- Keep the bar type, start and end hooks, hook orientation and cover when bars are redrawn
Four commands on the Structure panel of the ToRD tab
After installation, Modify Rebar adds the following buttons to the ToRD tab. Each button has a video guide: hover over the button and press F1.
-
Cut Rebar Length
Cuts the selected bars at a reference plane and creates a lap splice. Enter the lap length in the Cut Rebars dialog.
-
Extend Rebars To Reference
Extends bar ends to a Reference Plane you pick.
-
Extend Rebars To Face
Extends bar ends to the face of an element, such as a beam edge or a column face.
-
Stretch Rebars
Stretches bar ends by a fixed length. Enter it in the Input length box next to the button; the default is 500 mm.
Editing rebar with Modify Rebar, step by step
1. Installation and registration
- Download the installer for your Revit version (2019, 2020 or 2021) from the Download section, extract it and run the setup file.
- Open Revit. The ToRD tab appears with the Structure, Register and Author panels.
- Click Licensed on the Register panel and fill in your full name, phone number, email, organisation and position. Select the tool name in the Version box.
- Send these details with the code in the Key box to the Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (IIC). After checking them, the Institute sends back the activation details.
2. Cut bars and add a lap splice
- Draw a
Reference Planewhere you want to cut the bars. - Select the bars to cut, then click Cut Rebar Length.
- Enter the lap length in the Offset box (mm, default 350) and click OK.

3. Extend bars to a plane or an element face
- Click the arrow on the Extend to element button and choose Extend Rebars To Reference or Extend Rebars To Face.
- Select the bars to extend.
