MSc. Le Phong Vuong Bao

Managing Director of B Center Bim Construction and a master of project management. Leads the Revit Structure course at the Institute. The only member of our staff working in depth to the international ISO 19650 standard, with a specialism in precast concrete.

ROLE AT THE INSTITUTE

Teaching Revit Structure to international standards

Building a model is one thing; building it to the standard an international client requires is another. That is where his experience sits.

  • Leads the Revit Structure course at the Institute — structural modelling, reinforcement and drawing production.
  • Works to ISO 19650, the international standard for construction information management, and writes BIM execution plans for live projects.
  • Managing Director of B Center Bim Construction since 2018: developing BIM standards, protocols and workflows, coordinating multi-discipline models and resolving clashes.
  • Teaching BIM since 2016 to companies and research institutes, including Kien Giang Construction Consultant, the Institute for Water and Environment Research at Thuyloi University, the Center for Hydraulic Engineering Consultants and DHG Group.

CAREER

From site, through design, to information management

Fifteen years across the full range of roles: site supervision, lead structural design, project management, then construction information management.

Structural engineer and site supervisor - Industrielle Beteiligung (2011-2013)

Leading the structural design team, coordinating with M&E and architecture, checking shop drawings produced by the team, and supervising work on site.

Lead structural designer - Sino-Pacific Construction Consultancy (2013-2016)

Starting as site supervisor and project engineer, then structural leader: organising and reviewing the team work, analysing and evaluating structural schemes against the codes.

Structural project manager - ICIC (2017-2018)

Monitoring and coordinating with the client to keep work on schedule, and coordinating between the services, architectural and structural teams.

BIM Manager - Synectics Consulting (2018-2020)

Building BIM models for foundations and steel structures, developing department standards, templates and Family libraries, and mentoring the team on modelling methods.

Managing Director - B Center Bim Construction (since 2018)

Developing and implementing BIM standards, protocols and workflows; writing BEPs, coordinating discipline models, and managing version control and data quality across the project lifecycle.

WHAT HE TEACHES

The parts covered most closely

  • Structural modelling in Revit — building elements, placing reinforcement and producing the structural drawing set from the model.
  • ISO 19650 applied to daily work — naming, status codes, who delivers what to whom and when.
  • Writing a BIM Execution Plan — producing a BEP that works, not a copied template.
  • Precast concrete — modelling precast elements, connections and fabrication drawings.
  • 4D and 5D BIM — attaching programme and cost to the model for control, not just for presentation.
  • Data exchange with IFC and COBie — so the model can be handed to the operator, as international clients require.

TOOLS

Software used

  • Revit — all three disciplines: Architecture, Structure and MEPF.
  • Navisworks and Synchro — federation, clash detection and 4D sequencing.
  • Allplan — precast concrete modelling.
  • SAP2000, ETABS and SAFE — structural analysis.
  • MS Project — programme preparation and tracking.
  • AutoCAD — 2D drawings and legacy documentation.

EDUCATION AND AWARDS

Education and awards

A civil engineering degree at the University of Architecture and a master’s in project management at the University of Technology, both in Ho Chi Minh City.

  • MSc in Project Management — Faculty of Civil Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, 2013-2016. Thesis on discrete event simulation for improving project efficiency, second prize for outstanding thesis
  • Civil Engineering degree — Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Architecture, Ho Chi Minh City, 2006-2011, top five graduation theses
  • Consolation prize, National Mechanics Olympiad — 2008
  • Nguyen Thai Binh scholarship (Thanh Nien newspaper) and Vuon Len Tam Cao scholarship (Tuoi Tre newspaper)
  • Research interests — using BIM for cost control, programme optimisation, operations and facility management; integrating AI and blockchain into construction management
