ROLE AT THE INSTITUTE

Teaching AutoCAD and ETABS – SAFE as a structural engineer who automates

Writing programs for AutoCAD means knowing what a drawing is built from and which steps get repeated most. Mr Anh brings exactly that knowledge into the classroom.

  • Teaches the AutoCAD for Construction and ETABS – SAFE high-rise design courses at the Institute since August 2018.
  • Head of Programming at FrameTech DNG — building programs that generate 3D models and drawings of high-rise steel buildings in Japan inside Tekla Structures.
  • Linking AutoCAD with Excel and Tekla — programs that analyse drawing data and move information out of AutoCAD instead of retyping it.
  • A structural engineering background — eight years of analysis and drawing production before moving into programming, so he knows what structural drawings demand.

CAREER

From drawing structures to writing the drawing tools

Three companies, one direction: from analysis and drawing production to automating that work.

Structural engineer — VCS Construction Consultancy JSC (2015–2017)

Analysis and drawings for residential and high-rise buildings: a high-rise hotel in Ha Long, the Dong Tang Long social housing complex (three zones of six towers each) and the Mandalay MTSO building in Myanmar.

Structural engineer — LHT International Consultancy JSC (2017–2018)

Design of buildings for the Jimah (Malaysia) and Song Hau 1 (Hau Giang) thermal power plants and the tie-beam system for a 120 m tower crane at the Tan Thang cement project; analysis models in ETABS, SAFE and STAAD Pro.

Instructor — Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering (2018–present)

Teaching AutoCAD and ETABS – SAFE on the Institute’s courses.

Head of Programming — FrameTech DNG JSC (2023–present)

Developing automation programs in Tekla Structures and AutoCAD for the company and its Japanese partners.

WHAT HE TEACHES

The parts he covers in most depth

  • Setting a drawing up properly — units, layers, text and dimension styles: get them right once and the whole set stays consistent.
  • Blocks and reusable libraries — draw a repeated element once and change it in one place.
  • Presenting structural drawings — plans, sections, details and schedules the way structural engineers actually issue them.
  • ETABS – SAFE for high-rise buildings — modelling frames, slabs and foundations and reading results as on the high-rise projects he designed.
  • Layouts and plotting — title blocks, scales, plot styles and PDF output ready for submission.
  • Cutting repetitive work — spotting what the machine should do, combining commands and using built-in tools instead of editing objects one by one.

TOOLS

Software he uses

  • AutoCAD — the software he teaches, and the platform he writes automation for.
  • Tekla Structures — automated modelling and drawings for steel buildings.
  • ETABS, SAFE — his second teaching subject: high-rise analysis models; plus STAAD Pro for industrial structures.
  • Excel — two-way data exchange with AutoCAD drawings.

EDUCATION

Education

A structural engineer trained full-time at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.

  • Engineer in Civil and Industrial Construction — Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, full-time programme, graduated with distinction (2010–2015)

Learn AutoCAD from someone who writes software for it

Drawing fast is not about knowing more commands; it is about building drawings that need the fewest changes.
