ROLE AT THE INSTITUTE

Teaching BIM management from the client’s side of the table

Most BIM instructors come from design firms or contractors. He comes from the side that sets the brief: the people who write the EIR, approve the BEP, and live with the consequences when a model is wrong.

  • Leads the BIM Manager course at the Institute, where he has been teaching for over eight years.
  • Head of BIM management at Thai Binh Investment JSC since 2023, building the company BIM system from scratch — EIR, BCA, BEP, MIDP, CDE — with in-house training, a BIM to SAP link and models used for asset management.
  • Class I project management certificate across all three categories: buildings, industrial facilities and infrastructure.
  • Seven years at Novaland, from BIM-MEP design engineer to team leader, deputy project director, then project execution supervisor.
  • Builds BIM systems for companies: BIM specifications, competency frameworks and quality management procedures for design documentation.
  • Runs in-house BIM training for companies including Novaland, Taikisha, Mobifone Southern Branch, Tradeco, Hung Loc Phat and Royal Haskoning.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Three roles, three ways of reading one model

The same BIM model serves very different purposes for a contractor, a project manager and a developer.

Contractor — COFICO

Site MEP engineer on the Vista Verde project. Managed subcontractors, inspected materials and equipment, reviewed combined and shop drawings.

Project management consultant — Meinhardt Vietnam

MEP design coordinator on Vinhomes Central Park. Checked the quality of consultant MEP documentation, ran clash detection and coordinated meetings between parties.

Developer — Novaland (2015-2022)

BIM-MEP design engineer, then team leader, deputy project director and project execution supervisor. Prepared BEPs, MIDPs and TIDPs; managed documentation quality through the BIM model, reported design clashes and resolved them before site work.

International consultancy — Royal HaskoningDHV (2022-2023)

Senior BIM Coordinator on industrial projects: BIM coordination, clash reporting, workflow design and cloud collaboration.

Head of BIM management — Thai Binh Investment JSC (since 2023)

Building the company BIM system from the ground up: EIR, BCA, BEP, MIDP, CDE; in-house BIM training, linking BIM to SAP, and using the model for asset management.

PROJECTS

Projects he has worked on

  • Industrial — the LEGO Manufacturing plant.
  • Hotels and resorts — NovaBeach Cam Ranh, Movenpick Phan Thiet, Grand Mercure, Ibis, Babylon, Hotel H5.
  • High-rise buildings — The Grand Manhattan, Saigon Royal, Botanica, Richstar, Newton, Wilton.
  • Urban developments — Aqua Water Front, a 64-hectare subdivision with over two thousand apartments, a sports hall and a hotel.
  • Vinhomes Central Park — MEP design coordination for towers L and P.
  • Vista Verde — MEP supervision on towers 1 and 2.

TOOLS

Software he works in

  • Revit and AutoCAD — building and managing MEP models.
  • Navisworks — model federation, clash detection, 3D model management.
  • Dynamo — automation and moving data between programs.
  • ACC, Dalux, Trimble Connect and SharePoint — common data environments deployed on live projects.
  • Power BI — progress and model-quality reporting for management.
  • MS Project for master schedules, and Python for data work.

EDUCATION

Education and expertise

A water supply and drainage background, then a full move into BIM and project management.

  • Infrastructure engineering degree, water supply and drainage — Thuyloi University, Hanoi, 2004-2009
  • Class I project management certificate — buildings, industrial facilities and infrastructure
  • Project and design management — from seventeen years in practice, seven of them running projects on the client side
  • BIM management — writing BIM specifications, competency frameworks and company procedures
  • MEP quantity take-off from BIM models — for the tendering stage
  • BIM Coordinator training delivered to contractors and developers

Learn BIM management from someone who writes the client’s EIR

Knowing what a client demands of a model changes how you write a BEP.
