AutoCAD is the first program most civil engineering and architecture students have to use. Every piece of coursework needs drawings, and drawings get made in AutoCAD.
To install AutoCAD free for students costs nothing, and nothing is stripped out of the software. AutoCAD also remains the lightest product in the Autodesk range. But there is something to know first: the 2027 release demands considerably more than its predecessors, so do not assume any machine will run it.

Which students need AutoCAD
Almost all of them, and from first year.
AutoCAD is a two-dimensional drafting tool. Plans, sections, construction details, technical drawings in any discipline — all of it. Even if you later move entirely into three-dimensional modelling, reading and producing two-dimensional drawings remains the foundation.
Students in building construction, architecture, roads and bridges, water supply and building services all use it. What differs is the symbol set and drawing conventions, not the software.
Because you will use it for four years, the AutoCAD student licence is the one worth claiming first. And worth learning properly early: the Institute's AutoCAD course runs from drafting through to layouts and plotting a full drawing set.
Minimum requirements for AutoCAD 2027
This is where people get caught out, because AutoCAD has always had a reputation for being light. The 2027 release changed that.

Compared with the 2022 release, the basic RAM requirement has doubled, from 8 GB to 16 GB. Graphics memory went from 1 GB to 2 GB. If your machine is a few years old and has 8 GB, plan an upgrade before installing.
Operating system: Windows 11 only. Autodesk dropped Windows 10 support for the 2027 release. This is the change most likely to catch people out.
A note on graphics. Autodesk states that AutoCAD uses the graphics card for a range of essential operations, not just three-dimensional work: view manipulation, line smoothing, and text and linetype generation. That is why they recommend a card with dedicated video memory. Enabling the "Fast" visual styles additionally requires DirectX 12 at feature level 12_0.
For large datasets or point clouds, Autodesk gives separate guidance: 32 GB of RAM or more, and a card with 12 GB of video memory.
Specialised toolsets need extra disk space. This is where students run out of room midway:

The Mac version is lighter. The macOS build runs on Apple M series chips, needs macOS Sonoma or later, 8 GB of RAM basic and 16 GB recommended, and only 8 GB of disk space. The irony is that the Mac build is less demanding than the Windows one, at the cost of some missing tools.

AutoCAD is not the same as AutoCAD LT
The product list shows several names beginning with AutoCAD. Do not confuse them.
AutoCAD is the full product: two and three dimensions, the specialised toolsets, and support for programmatic extension. This is the one students should take.
AutoCAD LT is cut down: two dimensions only, no programmatic extension.
Other names such as AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Mechanical or AutoCAD Plant 3D are the specialised toolsets, which come with the full product.
What is new in AutoCAD 2027
An Education account grants the latest release, so you will be downloading AutoCAD 2027. The changes that matter to students, translated from Autodesk's What's New page:
Geometry Cleanup. AutoCAD 2027 scans a drawing to find and fix common geometry errors. Coursework drawings tend to accumulate overlapping lines, unclosed shapes and stray points, and this is precisely what the tool handles.
Autodesk Assistant. The assistant can count objects, analyse a selection, report units in context and offer suggestions.
Editing properties across multiple sheets. In the Sheet Set Manager, select several sheets and edit their shared properties at once. A real saving when a project name or title block information changes.
Easier polyline grip editing. The menu that appears when hovering over a grip has been rewritten to be clearer, and a lengthen option was added at the start and end points.
Ctrl+A selects all text in property dialogs. A small change, used often.
SAVEAS performs a full save rather than an incremental one, so files stay tidier.
The release also improves performance when editing arrays in place, and no longer switches the visual style while you do so.
Downloading and installing
Step 1: Open the product list and select the software
Open the Autodesk education software page and sign in with the school email you registered with. This is the page that carries the product list, and once your account is approved it shows your education entitlement expiry date at the top.
Find AutoCAD in the list, press Select, then press Select again under Student.
If you do not have an Autodesk Education account yet, work through Autodesk Education for students first. Without a verified account the product will not appear for download.
Step 2: Find the product and download the installer
Go to Products and services in your Autodesk account, scroll down to AutoCAD, press Install and then Accept to download the installer.
Once downloaded, right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
The installer asks where to put it. The default is fine.
Wait for it to finish, then press Start to open the program.
On first launch, choose Sign in with your Autodesk ID and use your school email. Enter the verification code sent to that mailbox and you are done.
Setting up for coursework
AutoCAD's defaults do not suit Vietnamese construction drawings. Four things to do straight away.
Set units to millimetres. Construction drawings here use millimetres, and AutoCAD may default to something else. Use the UNITS command. Do it before drawing the first line, because changing later throws off every print scale.
Draw at full size. One metre in reality is one thousand units in the drawing. Do not pre-scale anything. Scaling belongs to the printing stage.
Build a layer set from the start. One layer per kind of line: walls, columns, dimensions, notes, grids. A coursework drawing with everything on one layer is painful to edit, and the marker will spot it immediately.
Understand the two spaces. AutoCAD has model space for drawing and paper space for presentation. Draw at full size in model space, then set up the title block and print scale in paper space. Many students skip paper space and end up printing at the wrong scale.
Tips for project weeks
Four habits that speed things up noticeably, and that a marker recognises.
Use blocks for anything repeated. Doors, windows, sanitary fittings, level markers should all be blocks. Edit the block and every instance updates. Redrawing each one means redoing a whole afternoon's work when the scheme changes.
Version your file names. Do not overwrite. Save a new dated copy at every submission or milestone. Corrupted files mid-semester are a real thing.
Preview before printing. Check for scale errors, lines too thin or too heavy, and overlapping text. Finding those on paper costs money and time.
Learn the shortcuts for the commands you use most. About ten of them transform your speed. Start with line, copy, move, trim and dimension.
Five common problems
Downloading AutoCAD LT by mistake. Check the product name before pressing Install.
The installer takes a very long time. AutoCAD downloads more data as it installs. On a slow connection this drags. Do not cancel partway.
An unfamiliar interface on first launch. AutoCAD has several workspaces. Select Drafting and Annotation at the bottom right to get the familiar one.
Text turns into question marks in someone else's drawing. A font problem, common with drawings using older Vietnamese fonts. AutoCAD will offer a substitute. For coursework a substitute is fine, but check that annotation still fits its frames.
Running out of disk space midway. The installer unpacks to a large temporary folder before installing. Allow roughly twice the installer size, and clear the drive first.

Is there a Mac version?
Yes, and the 2027 release runs on Apple M series chips. The interface differs slightly from Windows and some tools are missing, but for two-dimensional drafting it is enough. Its hardware requirements are lighter than the Windows build.
How long does AutoCAD take to learn?
A few sessions to produce a simple drawing. But mastering it enough to produce coursework quickly and to standard takes structured learning, particularly layers, blocks and printing.
Is AutoCAD still worth learning if I have Revit?
Yes. Two-dimensional drawings remain the common language of the industry. Plenty of records, older drawings and contractor drawings are still AutoCAD files. Even working entirely in a model, you will receive two-dimensional drawings from others and have to issue them in return.
How far should a first-year student go with AutoCAD?
Far enough to draw and print coursework at the correct scale in a proper title block. Programming and deep customisation can wait.
