How long does it take to learn AutoCAD? It is the question I am asked most often, and the one that almost cannot be answered with a single number. Not out of evasion, but because the person asking is folding three very different things into the word "learn": operating the software, finishing a drawing, and producing a drawing set.
Those three are far apart. Someone who can draw shapes after two sessions may still need six months before a design office accepts their drawing set. This article separates the three levels, gives the real hours for each, and says plainly where teaching yourself works and where it will cost you twice the time.
Three skill levels, three very different timescales
After many cohorts of both students and working engineers, I see AutoCAD ability falling into three distinct levels.

Those are hours at the keyboard with a goal, not hours of watching video. In calendar terms, at a steady six hours a week: level 1 takes about two weeks, level 2 about two months, level 3 four to six months.
What matters is that the gradient between levels is not even. Zero to level 1 is fast and enjoyable; everyone feels competent. Level 1 to level 2 is where most self-taught people stop: it is no longer about learning commands but about learning the conventions of the profession. Those conventions live in the house practice of design offices, not in the software. Level 2 to level 3 has almost nothing to do with the software and everything to do with how you organise work.
Why level 1 fools almost everybody
Level 1 takes under two days. That is why so many articles promise "learn AutoCAD in 7 days", and technically they are not lying — seven days is enough to draw shapes.
But drawing shapes is not knowing AutoCAD. A technical drawing differs from a picture in that it must convey information to someone who will build from it. That means which lines are visible and which are hidden, how tall the text is, where dimensions go, how the scale is stated — all of it convention. The software does not teach you any of that, and neither does a search engine, because none of it lives in a command.
This is exactly what separates someone who draws shapes from someone who draws drawings. Teaching yourself: how long, and where it breaks
I will be blunt here, even though the Institute sells courses.
Level 1 you should teach yourself. Free material online will carry you through it comfortably, and paying to learn Line, Circle and Trim is a waste. Anyone who has already drawn a few figures before the first session gets more out of that session.
Level 2 is where teaching yourself is most expensive — in time. Self-taught people do reach level 2, but in my observation it takes roughly twice as long, and they arrive carrying habits that have to be unlearned. The three most common:
- Everything on one layer. Fine while the drawing is small. The day you need different line weights when plotting, or need to switch off the notes layer to check something, you are unpicking it all.
- Not drawing at 1:1. Drawing roughly and then stretching it to fit the paper at plot time. That drawing cannot be measured, cannot be taken off for quantities, and nobody can reuse it.
- Plotting straight from Model, never using Layout. Workable for one sheet; for a twenty-sheet set at several scales it becomes unmanageable.
The hard part of teaching yourself is not failing to find answers. It is not knowing that you are doing it wrong. Nobody looks at your drawing and says "that breaks the convention". Repeat a mistake a hundred times and it becomes a habit, and unlearning a habit takes longer than learning it right.
Level 3 is essentially not reachable alone in a reasonable time, because it needs a real drawing set to work on and someone who has done the job to review it. People already in employment learn this level on the job, with colleagues correcting them — which is itself a form of being taught.
How much a course actually saves
AutoCAD knowledge is free and everywhere. What a course sells is not knowledge but the things that are in no book and no video: the drawing standards large firms actually run on, the experience behind the rules, and a toolkit already sharpened.
The Institute's AutoCAD course from basic to advanced runs 13 sessions, roughly 26 hours in class plus homework, and it aims at level 3: students finish holding a complete reinforced concrete and foundation drawing set they produced themselves. That is why it is longer than a typical "AutoCAD basics" course — the final part stops teaching commands and starts teaching how to assemble a set.
Four things a class does that self-study struggles to replace:
The drawing standard large firms run on. This matters most and is hardest to find anywhere else. Every large design office keeps an internal standard: which line weight for what, how layers are named, what the title block carries, text and dimension sizes, how files are named and xrefs organised. None of it is published, because it is each firm's own house practice. Our tutors are engineers in current practice and bring the standard they use in the market straight into the class. Students draw to it from their first drawing, so they fit in from day one at a firm instead of unlearning habits — and unlearning is what costs newcomers the most time.
The experience behind the rules — the "why". A book tells you how; someone who has done the job tells you why, and when to break the rule. Why dimension lines belong outside the outline. Why you should not explode a block to edit it. Where to look when a drawing is unexpectedly heavy. Which sheet to start from when the design changes late, so the set does not fall out of step. These situations fill most of real working time and appear in almost no textbook.
A Lisp toolkit for speed. The class installs a library of Lisp utilities: batch numbering, summing object lengths, exporting schedules, changing layers in bulk, fast levels and annotation. Each saves minutes at a time, several dozen times a day. Fonts, hatch patterns and a ready-made detail library come with it. Assembling this yourself takes months and usually stays patchy, because the hard part is not finding Lisp files but knowing which ones are worth using.
Review on the spot, in the right order. The tutor looks at line weights, at layers, at the title block — the things that, once wrong, stay wrong across the whole set. The class also follows the order of a real drawing set: environment first, then drawing, then dimensions, then layout and plotting. Self-study tends to follow the alphabetical order of a command list, and ends up redoing work.
If you are already at level 2 — drawing cleanly but slowly, and shaky on Xrefs, multi-scale layouts or Lisp — there is no need to start again. The 8-session advanced AutoCAD course goes straight to that part.
Is AutoCAD hard to learn?
AutoCAD is not hard, but it is long. Nothing in AutoCAD 2D demands abstract thinking. What wears people down is the volume: hundreds of commands, dozens of settings dialogs, and no sense of when it ends.
The good news is that you do not need all of it. On an ordinary working day a drafter uses about twenty commands over and over. The rest are there to look up when a job calls for them. Anyone trying to memorise the whole command list before drawing anything has chosen the longest road available.
The fastest route is still the old one: take an existing drawing and reproduce it exactly. When you hit something you cannot do, look up that one command. Learned on demand, a command sticks the first time, because it is attached to a real task.
What hardware you actually need
This is where people worry more than they need to. AutoCAD 2D is very light compared with what most people imagine.

AutoCAD runs mainly on a single core, so clock speed matters far more than core count. And for anyone drawing all day, a large display is worth more than a graphics card — an ordering many people get backwards.
On software versions: students and teaching staff can use a free licence from Autodesk; the procedure is in Installing AutoCAD free for students. A newer or older release makes almost no difference to learning 2D, so do not let the version question delay your start date.
Does this cover 2D or 3D, and which do you need?
This question decides the whole path, so it is worth settling early.
In construction, AutoCAD is used almost entirely for 2D. Design sets, construction drawings, as-built drawings — all of them are two-dimensional. AutoCAD does have 3D, but construction barely touches it, because three-dimensional modelling moved to Revit and Tekla long ago, with far stronger tools.
So if you work in construction: learn 2D properly and leave AutoCAD's 3D alone. If you need a model, go straight to Revit and save yourself several months of detour.
AutoCAD's 3D is worth learning only for certain mechanical, interior or fabrication work — and even there Inventor and SolidWorks are steadily replacing it.
What to learn after AutoCAD
From level 2 you can start something else in parallel. There is no need to finish level 3 first.
