Two draughtsmen receive the same 40-sheet drawing set. It needs a new project name, a revised title block, and one detail updated on 25 of the sheets. The first takes a day and a half. The second takes 40 minutes, because the title block is an attributed block, the detail lives in an Xref, and the set is run from a Sheet Set.

That is what advanced AutoCAD means: not knowing more commands, but organising a drawing set so repeated work does not have to be repeated.

Fewer than four yes answers: you are at basic level, even if you have used AutoCAD for years. AutoCAD for civil engineering students describes the habits worth fixing first.

Four to seven: you are in the middle, and the ten skills below are what is missing. Eight or more: you are already working professionally, and the next step is automation, covered at the end.

Taken together, someone with all ten skills is usually twice as fast as someone at basic level on the same set. More important than the speed: their drawings can be reused, revised, and handed to someone else.

The four skills that make the biggest jump

Of the ten, these four create the clearest difference, and they are also the four self-taught users most often misunderstand.

Dynamic blocks. A block with parameters: a door that stretches to 700, 800 or 900 wide; a column with a section chosen from a list; a symbol that flips. Instead of 15 door blocks you keep one with 15 states. The common mistake is building a dynamic block so elaborate, with every possible option, that nobody can use it. The rule is one block per family of sizes, clearly named.

Layout. Model is where you draw at full size; Layout is the sheet, with its title block and viewports looking into Model at different scales. A plan is drawn once and appears on a 1:100 sheet and a 1:20 detail sheet without being redrawn. People who understand Layout never scale a drawing; people who do not scale the whole thing every time the sheet size changes and break every dimension.

Xrefs. The structural drawing references the architectural plan file rather than holding a copy of it. The architect revises, and opening the structural drawing shows the new version. On a multi-discipline project this is the only way everyone works over the same background, and it is the ancestor of model linking in Revit, discussed in What is Revit?. The common mistake is an absolute path, so the Xref breaks on another machine; the fix is relative paths plus a fixed folder structure.

Sheet Set Manager. Running the whole set as a project: a sheet list, automatic sheet numbers, batch plotting, and set-wide title block updates in one action. An office issuing drawings weekly without a Sheet Set typically loses half a day to plotting and numbering.

These four are the core of the Institute's eight-session advanced course: setting up the drawing environment, Xrefs and Layout, speed techniques, and producing real construction drawings. For in-house classes, the exercises use the company's own project files.

What an office CAD standard contains

Individual skill only pays off when the whole office works to one standard. A minimum standard has five parts.

  • A template. Units, limits, and a layer set with names, colours, linetypes and plotted weights. Plus text, dimension and multileader styles tied to scale; an attributed title block for each sheet size; and a plot style table.
  • Naming conventions. Files, layers, blocks and layouts named by discipline, stage and content. If the office is moving to Revit, align these with the naming convention of the BIM project.
  • A block library. Doors, equipment, symbols and typical details, checked, named, stored in one place, with someone responsible for it.
  • A project folder structure. So Xrefs and Sheet Sets work on every machine, not only the one they were built on.
  • A pre-issue check. Purge, Audit, layer review, a test plot, and a version freeze.

An office with this trains a new starter in a week. An office without it has as many conventions as it has staff, and every incoming drawing has to be cleaned. It is also the groundwork for BIM: good layer and naming conventions translate almost directly into object classification in Revit.

When a taught course is worth it

Most of the ten skills can be self-taught from documentation, on one condition: you have to know they exist and know where you are going wrong. Three situations call for teaching.

You have used AutoCAD for years but score under five on the self-test. The habits are set, and correcting them alone is hard because the old way still produces a drawing. A short course where someone points at the mistakes in your own file usually settles in a few sessions what self-study fails to fix in months.

The office needs a shared standard. Building the template, block library and conventions for a whole technical department is best done as an in-house class, so everyone learns the same standard and the standard itself is built during the course.

Frequently asked questions

How long does advanced AutoCAD take to learn?

About eight taught sessions, plus two or three weeks applying it to your own drawing set. Skills that are not used straight away are gone within a month.

Is advanced AutoCAD worth it if I am moving to Revit?

Yes, to the level of Layout, Xrefs, attributed blocks and drawing standards, because the industry still exchanges DWG files and two-dimensional details are still handled in CAD. There is no need to go deep into complex dynamic blocks if you will be modelling in Revit.

Are dynamic blocks hard to build?

A simple one, with a stretch parameter and a lookup list, takes a session to learn. Blocks with many parameters and constraints need practice, and are worth one question first: does the office really need this, or is a well-named set of ordinary blocks enough?

Which AutoCAD version has all these features?

Every release of roughly the past decade has dynamic blocks, annotative scaling, Sheet Sets, Xrefs and Fields. The differences between versions are mostly interface and speed, not the skills described here.

Can AutoCAD LT do this?

AutoCAD LT has Layout, Xrefs, attributed blocks and annotative scaling, and recent LT releases can insert dynamic blocks. What it mainly lacks is three-dimensional work and full programming access.
