ROLE AT THE INSTITUTE

From student of the Institute to a hundred courses taught

He learned ETABS, SAP and SAFE at this very Institute, then returned to teach in 2014. Someone who sat in the student seat knows exactly where learners get stuck.

  • Leads the Construction Drawing Reading course and the High-rise Design with ETABS – SAFE course, along with the SAP2000 course.
  • Teaching at the RDSIC centre since 2014, over 100 courses; writes his own outlines and material for the structural software, drawing-reading and high-rise classes.
  • Delivers structural training for companies across the country: Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Nam, Vung Tau, Lam Dong, Thanh Hoa, Dien Bien.
  • Holds a Class II practising certificate in structural design issued by the Hanoi Department of Construction, and the Institute’s BIM Manager training certificate.

CAREER

Running a design firm while teaching

Class exercises come from his firm’s live project files, not from prepared samples.

Head of structural design — VCC

Led and worked on the structures of major projects: FLC Ha Long (grade I), Eurowindow Nha Trang (grade I), the Trauma and Orthopaedics Institute at Military Hospital 175 (grade I), FLC Quy Nhon, and the Dung Quat vocational training centre.

Managing director — MNB Vietnam

Project lead and structural lead: schools in Dien Bien and Quang Ninh, factories in Hung Yen and Binh Duong, an industrial wastewater treatment plant in Hai Phong; also design verification work.

Lecturer — Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering

Over 100 courses since 2014: ETABS, SAP2000 and SAFE, drawing reading for newcomers, and the high-rise design specialisation for working engineers.

WHAT HE TEACHES

The parts he goes deepest on

  • Building the ETABS model right from the start — the analysis scheme, sections, loads and combinations to Vietnamese standards, where results are decided.
  • Reading and sanity-checking forces — knowing from the diagrams whether the model makes sense before designing reinforcement from it.
  • SAFE for slabs and foundations — from ETABS forces to slab, footing beam and pile cap design.
  • Drawing reading for people outside the industry — from symbols to a full document set, in the order practitioners actually read.
  • Foundations and soil mechanics — a national Olympiad background, used in the foundation part of the structural courses.

TOOLS

Software he works in

  • ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE — the core set for both design work and teaching.
  • PLAXIS — geotechnical analysis for foundation work.
  • AutoCAD — producing and reading structural documentation.
  • Excel — member design and checking spreadsheets to the standards.

EDUCATION

Education and expertise

A civil and industrial engineering degree with distinction.

  • Civil and industrial construction engineering degree, with distinction — Hanoi University of Civil Engineering
  • National Soil Mechanics Olympiad, honourable mention; second prize at university level
  • Class II practising certificate in structural design — Hanoi Department of Construction
  • Certificate in applying SAP, ETABS, SAFE and PLAXIS to structural design — Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering
  • BIM Manager training certificate — Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering
