Trimble lets you install Tekla free for students on a one-year subscription that renews while you are still enrolled. The software is identical to the commercial release, with nothing held back.
Getting it is not hard. What makes people give up halfway are two things few guides mention: the Educational profile is declared on a different site from the download page, and you must install a separate South-East Asia environment before Tekla understands regional standards.
This article walks the whole process with a screenshot at each step. Everything happens on Trimble's own site, so there is no reason to go looking for a cracked copy.
If you are not yet sure what Tekla is for, or how it differs from Revit Structure, read what Tekla Structures is first rather than installing it and leaving it unused.
Who Tekla Education is for, and what it includes
Trimble runs Tekla Campus for people studying at accredited institutions. Students and teachers use it free; a school that wants to license a whole computer lab pays a low fee.
A student account gets three things:
- Tekla Structures — the full application, single-user subscription, valid for one year.
- Tekla Structural Design Suite — Tekla Structural Designer plus Tekla Tedds, for structural analysis and calculation.
- Trimble Connect Personal — 10 GB of storage for sharing models, up to five people on a project.
Free online learning material and a Trimble certificate come with it.
One condition matters: the licence is for study only, never for commercial work. Taking paid drafting work or producing company documents on an Education licence breaks the terms. Real jobs run on the commercial release — the Institute's Tekla Structures course teaches on that version, the way steel fabricators actually work.
This is also different from the 30-day trial. Anyone no longer studying has only that route, and it stops when the trial ends.
Step 1: Create a Trimble account
Tekla belongs to Trimble, so the account is a Trimble Identity — nothing to do with the Autodesk account you use for Revit or AutoCAD. If you already know the Autodesk Education route, note that the two are entirely separate.
Go to download.trimble.com, click the person icon at the top right and choose Create account. Enter your first name, last name and email, then click Agree and continue.
Trimble emails a verification code. Paste it into the Verification Code box and click Submit.
Next comes the password. Trimble requires at least eight characters, with an upper-case letter, a lower-case letter, a digit and a special character.
The screens after that are promotional, so skip them: Skip for now, then Next, then Count me in!. At the two-factor screen, choose I'll enable MFA later if you want to move quickly — you can turn it on afterwards.
The site then returns to download.trimble.com. Click the icon at the top right again to confirm you are signed in.
Step 2: Declare an Educational profile, then check the licence
This is the step most people miss. The Trimble account you just created is an ordinary account — it carries no student licence yet. To get one, you go to a different site.
Open account.tekla.com, choose Sign in with your Trimble Identity and sign in with the account you just made. This page is called the Tekla Online Profile.
Fill in four fields, in the order they appear:
- Profile type — choose Educational.
- I am a — choose Student.
- Area of study or discipline — choose your field; civil engineering students choose Civil Engineering.
- Educational Institute and Phone number — your school and a contact number.
Tick the two confirmation boxes below, then click Save.
Then open the Activate licenses tab to activate the student subscription, and the Tekla licenses tab to check the result.
That table is where you find out whether you actually managed to install Tekla free for students or not. Two rows appear: Tekla Student and Tekla Student - Services. The word OK in the Status column means it worked.
The first row also says Version specific with the versions you are allowed to run. Read that line before downloading, because it decides which release you may install — an older version than it allows will not accept the licence.
If the Status column is empty or says expired, go back to the Activate licenses tab and repeat. Do not download the installer until this table shows OK; it will not run.
Step 3: Download the installer and the environment
Back on the Trimble download page, click Download under Tekla Structures.
Choose the version you want. Under Licensing method, select On-premises license — that is the licence type a student account uses. Click Next.
The next screen offers the main installer. The current release is Tekla Structures 2026 Service Pack 4, at 1.6 GB. Click its name to download.
Trimble states plainly on this page that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are not supported. A machine still on Windows 7 needs its operating system upgraded first.
Click Next to reach the Environments list. This is the most important part of the whole article, and the part almost no online guide mentions.
Scroll to South-East Asia, about 18 MB, and download it alongside the main installer.
Why the South-East Asia environment is not optional
The main installer is only the core of Tekla. The environment is what holds the material library, steel sections, drawing symbols, drawing templates and annotation conventions for a region.
Install the core alone and Tekla still opens, but you inherit an unfamiliar default standard: steel sections nobody stocks locally, and drawings that look nothing like the ones your fabricator is used to reading.
This is why people install Tekla, decide it is awkward, and never work out why. The software is not awkward. The installation was incomplete.
Download both files before installing anything.
Installing, then the first launch
The order matters. Main installer first, environment second.
Install the core. Right-click the Tekla Structures installer and choose Run as administrator. Without administrator rights the installer often stops partway. Choose the language, click OK, then Install. At the licence screen choose I accept the terms, then Next until you can click Install. When it finishes, click Finish.
At the end the installer says something worth noticing: Please install Tekla Structures 2026 Environments next — it is telling you the job is only half done.
Install the environment. Do exactly the same with the South-East Asia file: right-click, Run as administrator, OK, Next, Install, Finish.
The first launch. Open Tekla Structures and click OK. The software opens a browser so you can sign in — use the same Trimble account from step 1.
Once signed in, Tekla reopens and shows its setup screen. In the Environment box choose South-East Asia, the environment you just installed. The Configuration box should read Educational, which confirms the student licence was recognised.
Click OK, and Tekla opens on the new-model screen.
Five common problems
South-East Asia is missing from the Environment box. You have not installed the environment file, or you installed it while Tekla was open. Close Tekla completely and run the environment installer as administrator.
It opens and reports no licence. Check in this order: are you signed in with the right account, does the Tekla licenses table at account.tekla.com still show OK, and is the version you installed within the range the Version specific line allows.
The installer stops partway. Almost always administrator rights, or antivirus software blocking it. Turn the antivirus off briefly and install again.
*Configuration says something other than Educational.* The account signed into the software is not the one that activated the student licence. Click Switch user on the setup screen and sign in again.
It expires after a year. The student subscription runs in one-year cycles. While you are still enrolled, renew it at account.tekla.com — there is no need to reinstall the software.
What to do once it runs
Tekla differs from ordinary modelling software in one respect: it produces fabrication drawings that a workshop cuts steel and drills bolt holes from. A detail wrong in the model becomes a member wrong in the workshop.
Trimble's free online courses and certificate are enough to learn the interface and build a first model. Where self-teaching usually runs out is the step from model to fabrication documents — see how shop drawings come out of a Tekla model for what that stage involves.
The Institute teaches Tekla along two lines: Tekla Structures for steel and Tekla Structures for reinforced concrete, both following one real building through to a finished drawing set.
Frequently asked questions
Is the student version cut down?
No. The Education release matches the commercial one feature for feature. The difference is in the terms of use, and in the educational marking carried by model files.
Can I get it if I am not a student?
No. The programme is for people currently studying and for teachers at accredited institutions. Everyone else uses the 30-day trial, or learns on a commercial licence through a training course.
Can I register with a personal email address?
For the Trimble account, yes. But the Educational profile asks for the school you attend, and Trimble may ask you to prove you are enrolled.
Will Tekla run on a modest machine?
The installer alone is 1.6 GB before the environment. Tekla gets heavier with the number of members in a model rather than the floor area of the building, so a steel model full of connections is what consumes resources. Check the hardware requirements Trimble publishes for the exact version you plan to install, rather than going by an older release.
Can several versions of Tekla sit on one machine?
Yes, each in its own folder. But every version needs its own environment — Tekla 2026 needs the 2026 South-East Asia environment.
Do I need the Tekla Structural Design Suite as well?
Not necessarily. That is the analysis and calculation package, downloaded separately when you need it. Beginners should install Tekla Structures alone and keep the machine tidy.
