To install Revit free for students is not difficult. Autodesk grants the licence to anyone currently enrolled, and the software is identical to the commercial release.
The difficulty lies elsewhere. Revit is the heaviest of the Autodesk products a civil engineering student is likely to use. Installing it is easy; running it smoothly is another matter.
This article covers downloading and installing, then sets out the hardware you genuinely need.

Which students need Revit
Revit builds an information model of a building, and generates drawings from that model.
Architecture and building construction students usually need Revit from third year onwards, when projects start demanding a full document set. Before that, SketchUp and AutoCAD cover early studio work.
Structural students use Revit to model, then move to analysis software. Building services students use the MEP discipline.
One point about timing. The student licence runs in one-year cycles, so claiming it far too early wastes part of it. Claim it when you actually start learning — when you join a Revit course, or when you get a project that needs a model.
Minimum requirements for Revit 2027
Autodesk publishes three tiers for Revit 2027, and what makes them useful is that each tier is tied to a model size rather than described in the abstract.

Reading that table is refreshingly practical: open your model file, look at its size, and compare.
Coursework models usually sit below 300 MB, so 16 GB of RAM is enough. A multi-storey final project with every discipline in it can easily pass 600 MB, and that is where 32 GB starts to matter.
Requirements common to all three tiers:
- Operating system: 64-bit Windows 11.
- Processor: Intel or AMD with a base clock of 2 GHz or higher. Autodesk states plainly that the highest single-core base clock is what to look for, even though Revit does use multiple cores for some tasks.
- Graphics card: DirectX 11 capable with Shader Model 5, and 24-bit colour.
- Disk: 30 GB to install, and Autodesk recommends 100 GB free for temporary files. That second figure surprises people, but it is real.
- Framework: .NET 10.
A note on accelerated graphics. The Accelerated Graphics feature needs OpenGL 4.5 or later, and Autodesk recommends 8 GB or more of graphics memory. At the minimum tier they state explicitly that it is not recommended.
If you use a Mac. Revit has no native macOS build. Autodesk recommends Parallels Desktop, with macOS 13.7 or later, 32 GB of RAM on the host and 16 GB allocated to the virtual machine. You need at least 40 GB free, ideally 100 GB. One important caveat: accelerated graphics is not supported under Parallels.

What is new in Revit 2027
An Education account always grants the latest release, so you will be downloading Revit 2027. The changes that matter most to students, translated from Autodesk's What's New page:
Large models open faster. Revit 2027 can open a model incrementally, loading only the data needed to start work rather than the whole thing. This is the single most valuable change for a modest machine.
A Vulkan graphics option. Alongside OpenGL, the 2027 release lets you switch the accelerated graphics engine to Vulkan to make better use of system resources. Worth trying on a slower machine.
Ambient shadows in all accelerated views. Models gain visual depth without costing graphics performance.
Tag by Example. A new tagging workflow that produces consistent annotation faster. On a project where dozens of elements need tagging, the saving is obvious.
Placing standard rebar in 3D views. Structural students can place longitudinal bars, stirrups and path-based reinforcement directly in three dimensions.
MEP sizing calculators for duct and pipe. Building services students set the design constraints and let the software produce a table of sizes that meet the velocity, friction and capacity requirements.

The release also brings a good deal tied to the Forma cloud platform and embodied-carbon analysis. Students will rarely touch those, but they are worth knowing about, because a number of firms are moving in that direction.
Downloading and installing
Step 1: Open the product list and select the software
Open the Autodesk education software page and sign in with the school email you registered with. This is the page that carries the product list, and once your account is approved it shows your education entitlement expiry date at the top.
Find Revit in the list, press Select, then press Select again under Student.
If you do not have an Autodesk Education account yet, work through Autodesk Education for students first. Without a verified account the product will not appear for download.
Step 2: Find the product and download the installer
Go to Products and services in your Autodesk account, scroll down to Revit, press Install and then Accept to download the installer.
Once downloaded, right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. Skipping this is the most common reason an installation fails partway.
The installer unpacks itself and asks where to install. Leave the default unless drive C is nearly full.
Installation takes anywhere from a few dozen minutes, depending on the machine and the connection. The installer downloads more data as it runs, so stay online.
Signing in the first time
Open Revit and choose Sign in with your Autodesk ID. Use the same school email you registered with.
Autodesk sends a verification code to your school mailbox. Enter it, choose to trust the device so you are not asked again, then allow the product to open.
Revit restarts once more and you are done.
Worth doing right after installation
Revit is usable straight away, but these four things save trouble later.
Check units and the starting template. Revit installs with templates aimed at another market, and units may be in feet or inches. Switch to millimetres in the project settings from the outset. Changing later means rechecking every dimension already placed.
Turn on save reminders. Revit does not autosave the way office software does. Set a reminder every fifteen or thirty minutes. Losing a session to a crash is common during project weeks.
Keep the project folder in one place. A Revit model drags along linked files, referenced CAD drawings and family libraries. Scatter them and moving to another machine breaks every link.
Start collecting families. Families are the ready-made components — doors, columns, equipment. The library shipped with Revit leans towards foreign standards, so most users end up building or adapting their own.
Five common problems
It installs but reports an expired trial. You have not signed in, or signed in with the wrong account. Sign out and back in with your school email.
The installer stops partway. Usually because it was not run as administrator, or antivirus software blocked it. Disable antivirus temporarily and try again.
It runs but very slowly. Check RAM first. Open Task Manager while working; if memory is close to its limit, that is the cause, not the graphics card.
A file from a classmate reports a version mismatch. Revit cannot open files made in a newer release. Either they export back to your version, or you install theirs. In a group project, agreeing on one version in the first session saves a great deal of trouble.
No icon appears after installing. The installer puts the shortcut in the applications list, not always on the desktop. Type the product name into the Windows search box.
Running Revit on a modest machine
Not everyone can replace a laptop mid-semester. These four habits keep a modest machine workable.
Split the model. Do not put a whole building in one file. Divide it by discipline or by block, and link the parts when you need the whole picture. This is how firms handle large projects anyway.
Turn off shadows and heavy display modes while modelling. Work in wireframe or plain shaded. Switch to the attractive settings only when producing images.
Close views you are not using. Every open view consumes memory. Keep two or three and close the rest.
Clean the model regularly. Purge unused families and surplus views. Coursework models bloat with things loaded once and forgotten.
Do all four and a 16 GB machine will carry a final-year project. Do none of them and a powerful machine will still crawl.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Mac version of Revit?
Not a native one. Mac users run Windows alongside macOS or in a virtual machine, and either route demands a higher specification.
Will Revit run on 8 GB of RAM?
It will start, and small exercises will work. But a multi-storey project model will be painful. If you are heading into BIM, more memory is the first upgrade worth making.
Can several Revit versions coexist?
Yes, each release installs separately and they do not conflict. But each takes tens of gigabytes, so keep only what you need.
Will a file made on the education release open at work?
It will, but the file carries an educational marker, and that marker spreads to any commercial file referencing it. For coursework it does not matter.
