"Should I learn Revit Architecture or Structure?" is the question our Revit lecturers hear most often at the pre-course consultation, second only to "is Revit hard". And the common wrong answer is "start with Architecture because it is easier, then switch" — wrong because it ignores the only thing that should decide it: what job you are going to do.
This article gives a decision table by role, an honest account of how much transfers when you switch branch later, which branch is shortest of people in Vietnam, and advice for students who do not yet have a job to choose by.
The decision table: which branch for which role
Find the role you hold or will apply for. The last column is what to add after you are solid in your main branch.

If your role spans two rows, choose by whichever takes more of your time. If your company already uses Revit, ask which part they need modelled — that is the most accurate answer available to you.
At the Institute the three branches are separate 15-session courses: Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP. Each includes the shared foundation, so a beginner does not need a separate "basics" course first.
Learning one branch then switching: how easy is it really
This is the question behind the advice "do Architecture first because it is easier". The answer: you can switch, but only the foundation transfers, and the hard part of each branch does not.
The shared part is roughly 30–40% of the material: the interface, Project – Family – Type – Instance, grids and levels, views, Sheets, annotation and dimensions. Anyone solid in one branch moves through that part of another branch quickly.
What does not transfer is what decides it:
- Architecture to Structure: you have to learn reinforcement, the analytical model, bar schedules and structural drawing standards. Reinforcement in Revit is where many architects give up, because it demands an understanding of how structures are detailed, not just which button to press.
- Structure to Architecture: you have to learn materials, finishes, detailed stairs and railings, massing and architectural presentation. Structural engineers usually model quickly but produce drawings that look wrong by architectural standards.
- Any branch to MEP: you start again on systems, connectors, sizing, loads and how equipment connects. This is the hardest move of the three, and the reason MEP is short of people.
So, on the question of Revit Architecture or Structure: "do Architecture because it is easier, then switch" saves no time. It postpones the hard part and adds the time spent learning finishing work you will not use. Learn the branch of your own trade, then pick up the others at the level of reading and checking a model when coordination requires it.
Who Revit MEP is for, and which branch is shortest of people
Revit MEP is for building-services engineers — and the striking thing is that very few of them learn it. In Vietnam, building services is the discipline where 2D drawings remain most common. Meanwhile the large projects — towers, factories, data centres, hospitals — are exactly where clashes between pipes, trays and beams cost the most on site. When a project has to apply BIM under Decree 217/2026/ND-CP, the services model is usually the part with nobody to build it. What a building-services engineer needs to move from 2D to BIM walks through that move, from the habits to drop to a week-by-week path.
The result is that a services engineer who can model a complete system in Revit MEP tends to be paid better, and offered more, than colleagues with the same years of experience working in 2D. The second shortest branch is Structure — specifically people who can model reinforcement to a standard that schedules and issues properly; most Structure learners stop at concrete. Architecture has the most people, so competition at basic level is high and the advantage goes to those who are good at Families and visualisation.
None of this means architects should go and learn MEP. It means that if you are a services engineer wondering whether to learn Revit, the answer is yes, and sooner than everybody else. The Institute's Revit MEP course runs from water supply and drainage through HVAC and electrical to fire protection and pump rooms.
Advice for third and fourth-year students with no role decided
Students are the one group for whom "choose by your job" does not yet work, because there is no job. For them our lecturers advise three steps:
- Choose by the degree you are taking. Architecture students take Architecture; civil and transport engineering students take Structure; electrical, HVAC and plumbing students take MEP. Your degree is already a career choice, whether or not you have noticed.
- Use your coursework as the practice project. Rebuild a course project or your graduation project in Revit in the branch you chose. It is both the most effective way to learn and the piece of work to bring to an interview.
- Do not learn a second branch before you start work. One branch at working level is worth more than two at "I can open it". The second branch arrives naturally once you are on a project and have to coordinate with another department.
For civil engineering students still unsure whether they prefer structures or construction, and still asking whether to learn Revit Architecture or Structure: take Structure. Both directions need you to read and model the structural phase; the difference is only how deep you go into reinforcement. Frequently asked questions
Are Revit Architecture, Structure and MEP three separate programs?
No. Autodesk merged all three into a single Revit product years ago; "Architecture", "Structure" and "MEP" are simply tool groups inside it. You install once and all three branches are there.
Which Revit should I learn for interior design?
Architecture. Interiors in Revit use architectural objects — walls, ceilings, floors, doors — plus furniture and equipment Families. Families are the thing to add soonest.
I work in construction, not design. Which branch?
Structure, in most cases: it covers what gets built first and what carries the quantities. Add Navisworks for coordination once you can read a model.
Can I learn two branches at the same time?
You can, and it usually means neither reaches working level within the same period. Finish one branch to the point where you can issue a document set, then start the second.
Does choosing a branch limit my career later?
No. The foundation is shared, and coordination roles specifically require depth in one branch plus reading ability in the others. Choosing early is what gets you employed; breadth comes with the projects.
