The difference between BIM and Revit is the question people ask most when they start looking into BIM. The very phrase "BIM Revit", typed into search engines every day, shows the problem: a great many people treat the two as one thing. In our BIM Manager classes, the first question of the first session is almost always "I have spent three months on Revit — can I do BIM now?"
The short answer: BIM is a way of working, Revit is a piece of software. Saying "we do BIM using Revit" is correct; saying "BIM means Revit" is not, and that mistake is why many companies buy the software, send staff on courses, and get nothing back.

What each one actually is
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a way of organising project information around a shared model so that every party works from one source of data across the life of the project — design, construction and operation. BIM decides who creates what information, at what level of detail, for whom, and when.
Revit is Autodesk's software for building that model. It is a tool, in the same category as Archicad, Tekla Structures, Civil 3D or Allplan.
This is also the line between our Revit courses, which teach the tool, and the BIM Manager course, which teaches the process. A useful comparison: BIM is accounting, Revit is accounting software. Buying the software does not make you an accountant, and a company with accounting software can still keep its books badly if it has no process. The last letter of BIM is Modeling — an activity — not Model, a file. That is precisely why BIM cannot be the name of a program.
Four differences that show up in daily work
Definitions are easy to agree with and hard to remember. In day-to-day work, the difference between BIM and Revit shows up most clearly in these four places.
Scope. Revit stops at one discipline's model, built by one team. BIM covers the whole project: architecture, structure, services, contractors, the client, the operator — including parties that do not use Revit at all.
Life cycle. Revit is used mainly during design and documentation. BIM continues through construction, acceptance, handover and decades of operating the building.
Output. Revit produces a model file and a drawing set. BIM produces agreed information, handed over at the right moment — the model is only one part, alongside equipment data, programme, quantities and operating records.
What decides success. For Revit, skill with the software. For BIM, standards and the discipline of coordinating: how files are named, how models are split, how often they are exchanged, who signs off clashes. This is why a team fluent in Revit can still fail at BIM.
Why being good at Revit is not enough
Students are often surprised that a beautifully built model still does not make the project "run on BIM". The three most common reasons:
A correct model nobody else can use. Everyone names files differently, models are not split by floor or zone, units and base levels disagree. Federate three disciplines and they are metres apart. The problem is not Revit — it is that nobody agreed the standards before modelling started.
A model with shapes but no information. It looks like the building, but elements carry no codes, no materials, no equipment data. Quantities come out wrong and the operator cannot use it at handover. That is a three-dimensional picture, not yet an information model.
Nobody owns coordination. Each discipline throws its model over the fence; no one federates, checks clashes and chairs the resolution meeting. The clashes still get found — on site, when it is too late to fix them cheaply.

What real BIM needs beyond Revit
This is the answer to "so what is missing". None of the five below appears in any Revit course, yet without them it is not BIM.
A BIM execution plan (BEP). The document agreeing objectives, deliverables, level of detail, software, naming standards and the model exchange schedule. Without a BEP every party assumes something different. See What is a BEP?
A common data environment (CDE). The single place holding models and documents, with status and version history, so nobody works from a superseded file. See What is a CDE?
Level of development (LOD). How detailed an element must be at each stage and what data it must carry. Without LOD, modellers go either too coarse or too fine — both cost money. See What is LOD in BIM?
A coordination and clash detection process. Federation schedule, checking tools, who chairs it, how issues are logged and closed. This is where BIM saves money most visibly.
People holding the roles. A BIM Manager sets the rules and is accountable for information quality across the project; a BIM Coordinator federates models and clears clashes at discipline level. See BIM Manager and BIM Coordinator compared.

Does BIM have to mean Revit?
No. Revit is the most widely used tool in Vietnam for buildings, but it is one option among several:

What connects them is IFC, the open format for exchanging models between different programs. A real BIM project often has architecture in Archicad, steelwork in Tekla, infrastructure in Civil 3D, all federated in Navisworks. So what should you learn first?
The order I recommend to students, and it is the reverse of what many choose for themselves:
- Get fluent in one tool first. Revit is the sensible choice for building work. Learning process without a tool in your hands is memorisation.

- Learn the process once you can model. Only then do BEP, CDE and LOD mean anything, because you have run into the problems they solve.
- Learn the coordination role if you want to move towards management.

Frequently asked questions
Is Revit BIM?
No. Revit is software for building a model; BIM is how information and collaboration are organised around that model. Using Revit without agreed standards, a common data environment and someone coordinating is still not BIM.
Is Revit hard to learn?
The software itself is not — around two to three months of steady study gets you modelling and producing documents for one discipline. The harder part is organising the model so other people can use it, and that part is BIM.
How long from learning Revit to being able to do BIM?
Two to three months with guidance to become fluent in Revit for one discipline. Joining a real BIM project needs the process layer as well — BEP, CDE, LOD, coordination — typically a separate course of about two months, plus experience on live projects.
What does BIM stand for?
Building Information Modeling. The last word is Modeling, an ongoing activity, not Model, a file. That is exactly why BIM cannot be the name of a program.
Where should I study BIM?

Can you do BIM without Revit?
Yes. Archicad, Tekla Structures and Civil 3D are all used for BIM, and large projects usually combine several tools, exchanging models through the open IFC format.
