Revit Architecture is the name people still use for the part of Autodesk Revit meant for architects. The name is familiar, but a product sold under that exact name has not existed for years.
This article answers three questions: what the toolset is in Revit 2027, what the seven panels of the Architecture tab build, and how an architectural model turns into a drawing set. It ends with a learning order based on the Institute's step-by-step articles. For guided practice on a real building, the Institute runs a Revit Architecture course.
What is Revit Architecture: a toolset, no longer a separate program
Revit started as Revit Building, aimed at architectural design. Autodesk added Revit Structure in 2005 and Revit MEP in 2006, and after the 2006 release Revit Building took the name it is known by today. For years the three were sold as separate products for three disciplines.
From the 2013 release Autodesk also sold a single Revit covering all three disciplines. From the 2017 release the discipline products were dropped: only full Revit and Revit LT remain. So the name now refers to the architecture toolset inside Revit, not to a program you install on its own.
In Revit 2027 that toolset sits mainly on the Architecture tab of the ribbon. The documentation tools, such as views, dimensions, tags, schedules and sheets, are shared by every discipline and live on the View, Annotate and Manage tabs.
Revit LT is a cut-down, cheaper edition. According to Autodesk support, Revit LT has no worksharing, no analysis tools and no in-product rendering (Autodesk: differences between Revit LT and Revit). An architect working alone may manage with LT; a design team needs full Revit. Students and educators use full Revit free of charge, as described in installing Revit with a student licence.
What the Revit Architecture software builds: seven panels of the Architecture tab
The Architecture tab holds seven groups of tools, arranged roughly in the order a building is modelled.
| Panel | Tools | What it builds | Tutorial |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Build | Wall, Door, Window, Component, Column, Roof, Ceiling, Floor, Curtain System, Curtain Grid, Mullion | Most of the building: walls, doors, columns, roofs, ceilings, floors, curtain walls | Walls, doors, columns, roofs, ceilings, floors, curtain walls |
| 2 Circulation | Railing, Ramp, Stair | Circulation between floors | Stairs and railings |
| 3 Model | Model Text, Model Line, Model Group | 3D text, model lines, repeated groups such as a typical apartment | Groups and furniture |
| 4 Room & Area | Room, Room Separator, Tag Room, Area, Area Boundary, Tag Area | Rooms and areas, with tags that fill themselves in | Room areas |
| 5 Opening | By Face, Shaft, Wall, Vertical, Dormer | Openings in floors, walls and roofs, shafts through several floors | Floors and openings |
| 6 Datum | Level, Grid | The levels and grids the whole model hangs on | Grids and levels |
| 7 Work Plane | Set, Show, Ref Plane, Viewer | Planes to draw on and reference planes | Scope boxes and work planes |
Two points often confuse beginners. The Column button on the Architecture tab opens two commands: Structural Column places a load-bearing structural column, while Column: Architectural places an architectural column for cladding and decoration; see columns in Revit. And floors, ceilings and roofs are usually built by sketching a closed boundary in plan, not by drawing faces as in a 3D modelling program.
How architectural Revit produces the drawing set
In Revit, drawings are not drawn; they are taken from the model. Every plan, section and elevation is a view looking at the same model. Change a wall in plan and the sections, elevations and schedules change with it.
The part of the ground floor plan above shows that every figure is written by the model. The tag "P.KHÁCH 23.20 m²" reads the room name and area from the room element; move a wall and the area recalculates. The "+0.150" elevation is read from the toilet floor surface. The reference symbol shows the number of the sheet holding the detail, so renumbering that sheet updates every symbol pointing to it. The same logic runs through the schedules: a door schedule lists the doors that exist in the model, with the sizes and marks they actually carry, so a door deleted in plan disappears from the schedule as well.
An architectural drawing set usually contains the groups of sheets below, each produced with a different tool.
| Sheet group | Produced with | Tutorial |
|---|---|---|
| Site plan | Toposolid terrain and the site plan | Terrain |
| Floor plans | A floor plan view for each level | Visibility and view control |
| Elevations, sections | Elevation, Section, Callout | Sections |
| Dimensions, tags, notes | Aligned Dimension, Spot Elevation, Tag by Category, Text | Dimensions, tags |
| Construction details | Detail Line, Filled Region, Drafting View | Hatches and 2D details |
| Door, room and material schedules | Schedule/Quantities, Material Takeoff | Schedules |
| Perspectives | Camera, Render | Perspectives, rendering |
| Title block, drawing list | Title Block, Sheet, Sheet List | Title blocks |
When the set goes to someone working in AutoCAD, export it to DWG or PDF as described in exporting Revit drawings to CAD.
How the architecture track differs from Revit Structure and Revit MEP
The three tracks share one program, one interface and one way of producing drawings. They differ in the elements they build and what they deliver.
| Architecture | Structure | Building services | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main tab | Architecture | Structure, Concrete, Steel | Systems |
| Elements built | Walls, doors, rooms, roofs, ceilings, stairs | Columns, beams, floors, foundations, rebar | Pipes, ducts, cable trays, equipment |
| Typical output | Functional plans, elevations, door and room schedules | Structural plans, rebar schedules, analytical model | System diagrams, equipment schedules, clash checks |
The boundary is not rigid. Architects still place structural columns for setting out, and structural engineers still read architectural walls through a linked model. To choose a track, read which Revit track to learn.
Learn Revit Architecture in this order
The order below follows the sequence of modelling a building; each step is a Revit Architecture tutorial from the Institute in Revit 2027.
- Getting started: the Revit interface, units and templates.
- Setting out: grids and levels.
- Modelling: walls, mouldings, floors, columns, doors, curtain walls, roofs, stairs, ceilings.
- Function: rooms and areas.
- Documentation: sections, dimensions, tags, 2D details, schedules, title blocks.
- Presentation: perspectives, rendering, CAD and PDF export.

Common misconceptions about the architecture toolset
The first holds that architectural work requires downloading a separate architecture program. Since the 2017 release Autodesk no longer sells separate discipline products; the architecture tools come with full Revit and with Revit LT.
The second holds that the toolset is mainly for producing attractive 3D models. Its main value lies in documentation: plans, sections, elevations, schedules and the drawing list all come from one model, so the drawings always agree with each other.
The third holds that every column in an architectural set is the same. Revit distinguishes architectural columns (Column: Architectural), used for cladding and decoration, from structural columns (Structural Column), which are load-bearing elements and take part in the analytical model. Using the wrong kind makes both the schedules and the model sent to the structural team wrong.
The fourth holds that figures on Revit drawings must be typed in, as in AutoCAD. Room areas, elevations, dimensions and sheet numbers are all read from the model; typing a figure in place of a tag is the surest way to make the drawings and the model disagree.
Frequently asked questions
What is Revit Architecture?
It is the part of Autodesk Revit meant for architectural design, located mainly on the Architecture tab. Before the 2017 release it was also sold as a separate product.
Can I download the architecture edition on its own?
No. Installing Revit gives you the architecture, structure and building services tools together. Students and educators use it free through the Autodesk Education programme.
What computer do I need to run Revit?
64-bit Windows, at least 16 GB of RAM, a dedicated graphics card and an SSD are a sensible level for learning. Details are in installing Revit with a student licence.
How long until I can produce an architectural set on my own?
About four weeks to model a simple building, and two to three months to produce a drawing set on your own. The time for each stage is in the Revit learning path.
In short, the architecture part of Revit is the seven panels of the Architecture tab for modelling the building, plus the shared documentation tools that take the drawings from that same model. An overview of Revit in general is in Revit: the complete guide.
