What is revit structure: it is the structural modelling and documentation toolset built into Autodesk Revit, not a separate program you buy and install on its own. On a machine running the 2027 release there is no installer by that name. There is one Revit, and the structural side shows up as two tabs on the ribbon.
This article answers the four questions that usually travel together: where that toolset sits, what it produces on a Vietnamese structural drawing set, how it differs from Revit Architecture, and where to start learning. If you would rather go straight to the work, see the Institute's Revit Structure course.
What is Revit Structure: one Revit, several discipline toolsets
The short answer to what is revit structure: it is the everyday name for the structural side of Revit. Years ago Autodesk sold separate discipline editions, so the name stuck in the trade and in course titles. The release in use today is not split that way.
You can check it on the machine. Go to File › Options › User Interface. The Tools and analyses box lists each discipline toolset with its own checkbox. The first line is Architecture tab and tools. Below it sits Structure tab and tools with two children, Steel tab and tools and Structural analysis and tools, then Concrete tab and tools and two lines for the building services side.
Clear the structural line and the matching tab disappears from the ribbon; tick it again and it comes back. One installation, disciplines switched on per user. That is why architects and structural engineers share the same project format, the same component library and the same way of making views and sheets.
The seven panels on the Structure tab
The Structure tab in the 2027 ribbon carries seven panels, read left to right in working order.
| Panel | Tools and what they are for |
|---|---|
| Structure | Beam, Wall, Column, Floor, Truss, Brace, Beam System — the load bearing members |
| Connection | Connection and Connection Automation, for steel connections |
| Foundation | Isolated, Wall, Slab — pad footings, strip footings and foundation slabs |
| Model | Component, Model Text, Model Line, Model Group |
| Opening | By Face, Shaft, Wall, Vertical, Dormer |
| Datum | Level and Grid, the two tools that set out the building |
| Work Plane | Set, Show, Ref Plane, Viewer |
One detail is easy to mistake for a fault. Open a plan and Grid is live while Level is greyed out, because levels can only be drawn in a section or an elevation. Open a three-dimensional view and both go grey. Our article on grids and levels in Revit covers how to build both.
Another point sends newcomers hunting: none of the reinforcement tools live on the Structure tab. They sit on the Concrete tab right next to it.
The Reinforcement panel holds Rebar, Path, Morphed, Area, Fabric Area, Fabric Sheet and Cover. The Settings panel holds Cover Settings and Reinforcement Settings, where cover and bar parameters are declared.
What a structural model turns into on a real drawing set
This is where the effort pays off. The sample building used here is a four storey reinforced concrete house, and its structural model produces thirty sheets, numbered without a gap from KC-00.1 to KC-04.2.
| Sheet group | Content |
|---|---|
| KC-00.1 to KC-00.4 | Drawing register and general structural notes |
| KC-01.1 to KC-01.11 | Pile setting out, pile details, foundation plan, foundation reinforcement, column setting out and column reinforcement |
| KC-02.1 to KC-02.10 | Structural plans and slab reinforcement per floor, the sloped roof frame, sections |
| KC-03.1 to KC-03.3 | Beam details and beam reinforcement for the upper floors |
| KC-04.1 and KC-04.2 | Stair structure between the second and third floors |
Not one of those sheets was drafted by hand. Every plan and every section is a cut through the same model, and the quantity schedules read straight off the members. Change one column section and all three follow at once.
The section behaves the same way. Five levels are readable straight off the drawing: RF at +14.00, 4F at +11.10, and storey heights that are not uniform, with the top storey only 2900 against 3600 for the two middle ones. Column tags already carry the mark and the section size, for example C3.1a 220x300.
That is the fundamental break with CAD. On a CAD sheet a circle at a grid intersection is a column only because the reader says so; to the software it is a circle. Change the section and you edit every instance on every sheet, then recount the quantities by hand.
The trade off is that the modelling effort lands at the start of the job. Anyone used to CAD finds the first week slower, and only sees the gain from the first revision onwards.
What Revit does and does not do for a structural engineer
This needs saying plainly, because it is where false expectations start.
| Revit does | Revit does not |
|---|---|
| Model columns, beams, slabs, walls, foundations, stairs | Compute internal forces |
| Place reinforcement and schedule bar lengths and weights | Size members |
| Generate plans, sections, details and lay them out on sheets | Check capacity |
| Schedule concrete, formwork and reinforcement quantities | Produce design calculations |
| Let several people and several disciplines share one model | Replace an analysis package |
So the full workflow still involves two packages. One computes forces and picks sections; the other models the building and issues the drawings. The handover point is the analytical model of bars, panels, releases and loads. Our comparison of two common analysis routes is in Robot Structural Analysis versus ETABS.
The 2027 release changed a fair amount on the structural side. Autodesk's What's New in Revit 2027 page lists placing shape driven rebar directly in three-dimensional views. Bar weight is also calculated automatically and shown in properties, schedules and tags.
How Revit Structure differs from Revit Architecture
The two toolsets feel the same to use but differ in what has to be right.
| Item | Architectural side | Structural side |
|---|---|---|
| Columns | Architectural columns, shape and finish | Structural columns, section, material, base and top constraints |
| Floors | Layered architectural floors | Structural floors that carry load and hold rebar |
| Walls | Envelope and partitions | Shear walls and lift cores |
| Main view | Floor plan | Structural plan, cut at the structural level |
| What the sheet must state | Clear dimensions, finishes | Section sizes, soffit levels, reinforcement |
| Ribbon tab | Architecture | Structure and Concrete |
One detail gets missed often: architectural and structural columns share a ribbon button but behave quite differently. Pick the wrong one and the schedule loses a column. The article on columns in Revit goes into it.
Where the structural model sits in the BIM workflow
On a project with the full set of disciplines, the structural model sits in the middle. It takes its shape from the architecture and has to leave room for the services to pass.
| Relationship | What is exchanged |
|---|---|
| From architecture | Grids, levels, wall positions, lift and stair cores |
| To architecture | Real member sizes, slab thickness, shear wall positions |
| With services | Beam penetrations, riser shafts, plant loads on the roof |
| To analysis | The analytical model of bars, panels, releases and loads |
The level most Vietnamese projects are working towards is the one where each discipline keeps its own model and exchanges through a common format in a common data environment. The structural file never lives alone, and every time the other side changes, this side has to be reviewed. The groundwork is in what BIM is.
How heavy the coordination really is shows the moment you open a structural file taken from a common data environment on another machine. Revit lists the missing references at once: the architectural model, the site model and a run of CAD files.
Revit structure download: which build to get and how to install it
The phrase revit structure download is still typed a great deal, but no installer carries that name. What you download is Revit, one single build, with the structural toolset already inside it.
There are two legitimate routes. Students and teaching staff register an Autodesk education account and download the build for study; the steps are in installing Revit free for students. People in practice use the company subscription, because documents issued for a real project must not be produced on the education build.
Where to learn Revit Structure without wasting time
Beginners usually start in the wrong place, opening the software and drawing a column straight away. A cheaper order is to follow the sequence of a real drawing set.
- The template first. Put units, line weights, symbols and levels into a template and reuse it. Plenty of people search for a revit structural template to download, but building one yourself is how you find out what is inside it; the steps are in the Revit structural template.
- Setting out. Grids and levels frame every member, so finish them before placing columns.
- Members. Columns, beams, slabs, walls, foundations, in that order.
- Reinforcement. Declare bar diameters, cover and bend radii on the Concrete tab before placing anything. This is the thickest part of the job.
- Drawings. Views, annotation, sheet layout, quantity schedules, PDF and DWG output.
Self taught engineers usually reach stage three and stall at stage four, because reinforcement needs disciplined modelling from the start. That is why people in practice tend to pick a revit structure course with someone marking their work. If you are unsure which branch to learn revit structure alongside, read Revit Architecture, Structure or MEP.
What people get wrong about Revit Structure
| What you often hear | What Revit 2027 actually does |
|---|---|
| You have to buy a separate Revit Structure | One Revit, discipline toolsets switched on in Options |
| Revit can design the structure and replace ETABS | It computes no forces and sizes nothing, it only exchanges an analytical model |
| Knowing Revit Architecture means you can do structures | The tools feel the same, the objects and constraints do not |
| Modelling is slower than CAD, so it is not worth it | Slower in week one, faster from the second revision because every sheet reads one source |
| Reinforcement is on the Structure tab | Reinforcement is on the Concrete tab next to it |
Frequently asked questions
Are Revit Structure and Revit two different programs?
No. There is one program called Revit. Revit Structure is the common name for its structural side, left over from the days when Autodesk sold separate discipline editions.
Do I need Revit Architecture before the structural side?
Not strictly. But knowing how views, sheets and loadable families work first makes the structural side much quicker, because both sides share all of that.
Can Revit replace ETABS or SAP2000?
No. Revit models the building and issues the drawings; the analysis package computes forces and sizes members. They exchange an analytical model rather than replacing each other.
Can reinforcement be modelled inside the project?
Yes. The reinforcement tools sit on the Concrete tab and place main bars, links and top bars, then schedule lengths and weights in the project.
Will a modest machine run Revit for structural work?
It will for low rise buildings. Memory is the first limit, then single core speed when opening and upgrading files; the graphics card only affects how smoothly the model spins.
