Clients cannot read a floor plan. They look at a rendered view and decide. That is why every architectural office has a place for whoever makes the persuasive image, and architectural visualisation is the name of that work. The question architecture students ask is whether this is a career to follow, or a side skill every architect needs anyway.
This article answers that, explains what each of the three tools does in the chain, and sets out a 12-week path from SketchUp through 3ds Max to Photoshop. It then describes the freelance market in Vietnam and what a portfolio needs before anyone will hire you.
A career or a side skill
Both, depending on what you want.
As a side skill, visualisation at a basic level is compulsory for every architect and architecture student. That means massing, applying materials, placing lights, rendering a view clean enough to present a scheme, then light post-production. At this level an architect renders their own design and a student renders their own project. SketchUp or Revit for first and second year architecture students? places this skill in the first two years.
As a career, the visualisation artist makes images, films and interactive views of other people's designs, for architectural offices, property developers, interior companies and contractors. They do not design, but they decide how the design is seen. The job comes in two shapes: employed inside a design office or a visualisation studio, or freelance by project. The second is very well developed in Vietnam.
The way to tell the two levels apart is time. An architect produces an exterior view in a day at "good enough to present"; a visualisation artist produces one in a day at "indistinguishable from a photograph". That difference is what the market pays for.
Three tools, three jobs
The common chain in Vietnam uses three tools. Each has its own job, and they rarely stand in for one another.

There are variants. SketchUp can be replaced by Revit, taking the model straight from the design set, or the model can be built directly in 3ds Max. Rendering can be done in Lumion, Enscape or Twinmotion where speed matters more than ultimate quality. But SketchUp to 3ds Max to Photoshop remains the standard for most studios and freelancers in Vietnam, because it gives the highest quality for a reasonable cost of learning.
The decisive stage is 3ds Max with its renderer. This is where "good enough to present" becomes "indistinguishable from a photograph". Materials, lighting and camera take up most of the learning time, and decide image quality more than the model itself does.
Should you learn SketchUp or 3ds Max?
This is the question people ask first, and it frames the problem wrongly. The two tools do not substitute for each other. They do different stages of one chain, and working professionals use both.
The right question is which to learn first, and where to stop. That depends on what you need.
You need to present your own schemes. This is the architect and the student. Learn SketchUp first; two or three weeks gets you to a usable level. For better images, add a real-time renderer such as Lumion or Enscape. This group can stop here and never touch 3ds Max.
You want to be paid for visualisation. Still learn SketchUp first, but only for fast massing. Most of your time goes into 3ds Max, because that is what decides your income.
You already have a model from Revit. Skip SketchUp and import straight into 3ds Max. A learning path for Revit beginners covers that branch.
Put another way, only the first group genuinely needs one tool, and only while the requirement stops at presentation.
A 12-week learning path
This path assumes an architecture student, or anyone who can already read drawings, studying ten hours a week. The goal is three to five images good enough for a portfolio.

The path is assembled from three of the Institute's courses. SketchUp, 12 sessions covers massing. 3ds Max, 15 sessions covers the interface and project management, spline and poly modelling, materials, lighting and camera, V-Ray rendering, and a finished visualisation project. Architectural Photoshop, 8 sessions covers exterior and interior post-production and coloured plans and sections.
The difference taught classes make shows up in week 3 and weeks 8–9. Principles of the image, and lighting, are exactly what self-taught learners skip on the way to the buttons. It is also why self-taught images look artificial.
The freelance market in Vietnam
Visualisation is one of the few parts of the construction industry where freelancing is the main road rather than a sideline. Three features of the market here:
Demand is steady and varied. Small architectural offices do not keep a full-time visualiser. Developers need images to sell. Interior companies need images per apartment. Contractors need them for tender documents. Each source has its own rhythm, and together they add up to year-round work.
Price follows quality and speed, not qualifications. A good exterior view of a townhouse is priced by complexity and by the reputation of whoever makes it; images for large developments or animated films cost considerably more. Nobody asks about your degree. They look at the portfolio and ask when it will be ready.
Foreign clients through platforms. A significant number of Vietnamese visualisers work for clients abroad through freelance platforms at higher rates than domestic work. The conditions are enough English to negotiate a brief, and quality at an international level.
The downside: heavy competition at the low end, uneven workflow, and you pay for your own high-specification computer and software licences. People who take this road usually start with work on the side while studying or employed, then move across once the client base is steady.
What a portfolio needs
The portfolio is the only thing this market looks at. From the Institute's experience guiding students into their first jobs:
- Five to eight good images, not thirty average ones. Viewers decide in about thirty seconds, and one weak image drags the whole set down.
- Enough range: at least one daylight exterior, one sunset or night exterior, two interiors, and one overall or aerial view.
- Images that show lighting and materials, because that is what separates professional from student work. A simple living room with good light beats a complex villa with flat light.
- State your role clearly: what you did in each image, and whose design it is. The market is small and overstating gets noticed.
- One online page, on a portfolio platform or your own site, with full-resolution images, fast loading and clear contact details.
The Institute's 3ds Max course ends with a finished visualisation project for exactly this reason. Students leave with their first portfolio images, not only with knowledge.
Frequently asked questions
Can you work in architectural visualisation without an architecture degree?
Yes. Many good visualisers come from fine art, graphic design or are self-taught. What has to be made up is reading drawings and understanding proportion and basic construction, so that what you model is right.
How long does 3ds Max take to learn?
To render a clean image, two to three months at ten hours a week. To a professional level — photographic, fast and consistent — six to twelve months of real work.
Can Lumion or Enscape replace 3ds Max?
For fast views, walkthrough films and presenting schemes inside a design office, yes, and that is the trend among architects. For the highest quality images used in sales and by studios, 3ds Max with V-Ray or Corona is still the standard.
What computer do you need?
3ds Max and rendering want a many-core CPU, 32 GB of RAM or more, and a strong discrete graphics card. It is the largest investment the job requires. While learning you can work on something weaker with small scenes.
Will automated tools replace visualisation?
Real-time renderers and automated assistance are making the "good enough to present" tier cheaper quickly. The tier that looks photographic, with deliberate lighting and composition, still needs a person, and the price of that has not fallen.
