ROLE AT THE INSTITUTE

Bringing BIM to electrical infrastructure

Most BIM material and training in Vietnam is written for buildings. Substations and transmission lines pose a different set of problems, and this is the part of the field he goes straight into.

  • Leads the Revit Structure course — modelling reinforced concrete structures, placing reinforcement and producing the structural drawing set from the model.
  • Leads the Tekla Structures course — modelling steelwork, bolted connections and producing the shop drawing set for the workshop.
  • Brings power-project problems into class. Five years on substations and transmission towers supply examples a building-focused structures class never sees: equipment foundations, lattice towers, bolted connections under load reversal.
  • Teaching at the Institute since 2018, alongside design and BIM coordination work in industry — so the material comes from live projects.

CAREER

From structures, through BIM, to running a company

Starting in concrete and steel structural analysis, moving into BIM modelling and coordination, then founding a construction technology consultancy.

Structural engineer — VPCC and VIMARTEC (2016–2018)

Reinforced concrete analysis and design at VPCC, then steel structures at VIMARTEC, the Vietnam Marine Technology Development and Technical Investment Company.

BIM engineer — IDJ Engineering & Construction (2018–2020)

Structural modelling and detailing, coordinating work between contractors, technical support for site. Started teaching at the Institute during this period.

BIM Manager — Northern Electric Consultant Company (2020–2025)

Five years designing substations and transmission lines, as BIM Coordinator then BIM Manager, with research and development of BIM tools for the company.

Director — HPC JSC (since 2025)

Running a construction technology consultancy, continuing to design power projects and develop BIM software.

WHAT HE TEACHES

The parts covered most closely

  • Modelling the civil works of a substation — transformer foundations, equipment structure footings, cable trenches, oil containment walls and the control building.
  • Transmission towers in Tekla — modelling the lattice, bolted connections, fabrication drawings and steel schedules.
  • Steel shop drawings — turning a model into the set the workshop cuts, drills and assembles from, where one wrong detail spoils a whole batch.
  • Multi-discipline coordination and clash detection — federating models, finding conflicts and chairing their resolution before anything reaches site.
  • Quantity schedules out of the model — so the numbers can feed an estimate rather than just look convincing.

TOOLS

Software used

  • Tekla Structures — steelwork, transmission towers and shop drawings.
  • Revit — architectural and structural models, and the civil side of substations.
  • AutoCAD and Infraworks — 2D drawings and corridor infrastructure models.
  • SAP2000, ETABS, Abaqus and GeoSlope — structural and geotechnical analysis.

EDUCATION

Education and expertise

A civil engineering degree then a master’s, both at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, alongside ten years in practice.

  • Civil Engineer — Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, 2011–2016
  • Master’s degree — Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, 2021–2023
  • BIM for electrical infrastructure — five years at the Northern Electric Consultant Company
  • Steel structures and shop drawings — Nam Dinh Vu Port, Go Vision and AILAIKA factories
  • Multi-discipline BIM coordination — Hoa Xuan Interchange in Da Nang, Tecco Complex, buildings A2 and H3 at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering
