ROLE AT THE INSTITUTE

BIM seen by the people who have to build it

A model that looks good on screen and a model that can actually be built are two different things. This is the view of someone who receives the model and then has to turn it into a building.

  • Leads the BIM Manager course — process, the BIM execution plan, the common data environment and organising information across a project, taught by someone currently holding that role in industry.
  • Leads the Revit Structure course — structural modelling, reinforcement and drawing production, with the requirement that the model works on site.
  • Trains engineers, architects, drafters and students in BIM at the Institute, alongside the day job in industry.
  • A southern base. Every project on the record is in Ho Chi Minh City or nearby, so the working and coordination practices of the southern market are first-hand.

CAREER

From site, through design, to the BIM office

Starting with site supervision, moving into detailing and temporary works design, then taking charge of BIM for the whole company.

Site supervision — Phu My Hung and Conic projects

Supervising the Garden Court I mixed-use housing, the Garden Plaza II apartments at Phu My Hung, and Conic Gateway. The stage where you learn whether a drawing survives on site.

Detailing and temporary works

Reinforcement detailing for the My Van 2 villas and the Class 1 GreenValley project. Analysis and design checking of temporary works for Crescent Mall phase 2, The Antonia S6-1, Riverpark Premier H24 and the L’Arcade 1 C17 apartments.

Head of BIM — Vicons Construction

Managing and delivering BIM on Class 1 projects: Hung Phuc S10, Nam Phuc S63 at Phu My Hung, the S4-3 mixed-use residential lot, The Antonia S6.1 and L’Arcade 1 C17, plus BIM design consultancy for projects across Ho Chi Minh City.

Teaching — Institute of Information Technology in Civil Engineering

Training engineers, architects, drafters and students in BIM, bringing live situations from the BIM office into class.

WHAT IS TAUGHT

The parts covered most closely

  • Models that construction can actually use — splitting by pour sequence, naming elements the way a contractor searches for them, and detail that is sufficient rather than excessive.
  • Construction methods and temporary works — formwork, falsework and working platforms: analysed and checked before they reach site.
  • Reinforcement detailing — turning design drawings into construction drawings a steel fixer can read and bend correctly.
  • Federating and clash detection in Navisworks — the process for resolving conflicts between structure, architecture and services before site.
  • Quantities for construction — by pour and by stage, which is not the same as quantities for an estimate.

TOOLS

Software used

  • Revit Architecture and Revit Structure — architectural and structural modelling.
  • Navisworks Manage — federating models, clash detection, sequencing.
  • Robot Structural Analysis, SAP and ETABS — structural analysis.
  • Plaxis and Geo5 — geotechnics, retaining walls and excavations.
  • AutoCAD Structural Detailing — reinforcement detailing.
  • VBA and VB.Net in Excel — automating quantity and checking spreadsheets.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Education and practising certificates

A civil engineering degree, a master’s in construction management, and two Class 1 practising certificates.

  • Civil Engineer — Saigon Technology University, 2008
  • MSc in Construction Management — Thuyloi University, 2013
  • Class 1 practising certificate, construction supervision — Ministry of Construction
  • Class 1 practising certificate, design — Ministry of Construction
  • Intensive English Language Programs — Temple University, Philadelphia, USA

Learn BIM management from someone holding the role

A model that looks good on screen may still be unbuildable.
