Manage, Simulate or Freedom
The product list shows several names. Picking the wrong one means installing twice.
Navisworks Manage is the full product: clash detection, schedule simulation, quantity take-off. This is the one to take.
Navisworks Simulate has schedule simulation but no clash detection. Clash detection is precisely what a multi-discipline project needs.
Navisworks Freedom only views models. It is free to anyone, no Education account required, but does nothing beyond viewing and measuring.
In short: with a student entitlement, take Manage.
Which students need Navisworks
Anyone doing multi-discipline coursework, and anyone studying BIM.
Architecture and construction students use it to check whether their model collides with building services. Building services students use it to coordinate ducts and pipes against the structure. Students doing construction planning projects use the schedule simulation.
The sensible time is after you are comfortable in Revit, usually fourth year. Learning Navisworks before you can model leaves you with nothing to federate. Claim the licence when the multi-discipline work actually starts.

Minimum requirements for Navisworks 2027
The official requirements are surprisingly low — the lowest of any Autodesk product students commonly use.

The most notable point: Navisworks 2027 still supports Windows 10. Revit, AutoCAD and Civil 3D all dropped it for the 2027 release; Navisworks did not. An older machine that has not moved to Windows 11 can still run it.
But do not misread that 2 GB figure. It is the level at which the software starts and runs, not the level at which you work. Autodesk publishes no recommended tier tied to model size the way it does for Revit.
From classroom experience, here is what matters: Navisworks holds every federated model in memory at once. Three discipline models together can be several times heavier than any one of them alone. The more memory the machine has, the more you can federate without it stalling.
A quick way to estimate before federating: add up the file sizes of the models. What Navisworks actually consumes is usually several times that figure.
Graphics are undemanding. Navisworks displays a simplified representation, so it does not need the card Revit does. Shader Model 2 is a very old requirement that essentially every current card exceeds.
In short: if the machine runs Revit, it will certainly run Navisworks. The only thing to weigh is memory when federating several models.

What is new in Navisworks 2027

Clash Detective has been redesigned. The clash detection tool, the most important part of the product, has a reworked interface and new capabilities. That alone is reason enough to use the 2027 release.
More file formats supported. Navisworks 2027 reads a wider range of formats. On a project where each discipline uses different software, that helps directly.
A stronger Appearance Profiler. The tool that colours objects by filter, used to distinguish disciplines or construction phases within a federated model.
Customisable quick access toolbar. Putting your most-used commands on the top bar is easier than before.
New interface and icon set. Every icon in the product has been redrawn.
Better support for 3D mice. Anyone using a dedicated device to navigate models will notice the difference.
The release also improves the command line, adding new commands and better support for batch automation.
Downloading and installing
Step 1: Open the product list and select the software
Open the Autodesk education software page and sign in with the school email you registered with. This is the page that carries the product list, and once your account is approved it shows your education entitlement expiry date at the top.
Find Navisworks Manage in the list, press Select, then press Select again under Student.
If you do not have an Autodesk Education account yet, work through Autodesk Education for students first. Without a verified account the product will not appear for download.
Step 2: Find the product and download the installer
Go to Products and services in your Autodesk account, scroll down to Navisworks Manage, press Install and then Accept to download the installer.
Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
Choose where to install and press Install. This installer is lighter than Revit or Civil 3D, so it finishes sooner.
Open it and sign in with your school email as with the other products.
Getting Revit models into Navisworks
There is one more step that trips people up.
Navisworks does not open Revit files directly. Two routes exist.
First: export from Revit. The Navisworks installer adds an exporter to Revit. Open the model in Revit, use the export command for the Navisworks format, and open that file in Navisworks. This route preserves the most information.
Second: federate through IFC. Navisworks reads many formats including IFC. Export the Revit model to IFC and federate that.
One condition matters: install Revit first, then Navisworks. In the other order the exporter never appears in Revit and you have to reinstall Navisworks.
A federation workflow for coursework
Follow this order. It saves a great deal of time compared with improvising.
Step one: agree the origin. The whole group must use one origin point and one project north before anyone starts modelling. Skip this and the three models sit tens of metres apart when federated, with no quick fix.
Step two: export each model. Each discipline exports to the Navisworks format. Name files clearly by discipline and date, because you will export repeatedly.
Step three: federate and save a master file. Open Navisworks, append each model in turn, and save a separate master file. Do not overwrite the discipline files.
Step four: define clash rules. Do not test everything against everything, or you will get thousands of meaningless results. Define specific pairs: ducts against beams, pipes against columns, cable trays against slabs.
Step five: filter and resolve. Not every clash needs fixing. A pipe passing through a wall opening is expected. The coordinator's job is to isolate the clashes that would actually cause trouble on site.
Work through these five once and you understand why real projects employ someone dedicated to coordination.
Five common problems
Installing Simulate or Freedom by mistake. Check the name before pressing Install. You want Manage.
The export command is missing from Revit. Navisworks was installed before Revit. Run the Navisworks installer again and choose repair, or reinstall.
The machine freezes after federating. Almost always memory. Try federating models in pairs rather than all three at once.
Federated models sit offset from one another. The disciplines used different origins. Fix it at source by agreeing the origin in Revit and re-exporting, rather than dragging things around in Navisworks, because the next export will be offset again.
Clash detection returns thousands of results. Not a software fault but rules that are too broad. Narrow them to specific discipline pairs, and set a sensible tolerance instead of leaving the default.
