A structural package runs to thirty sheets scattered across half a dozen folders. Plotting means opening each file, setting the paper size again, plotting, and hoping nothing was missed. Adding one drawing in the middle means renumbering thirty title blocks by hand.
Sheet sets in AutoCAD exist to remove both jobs. They gather the sheets into one ordered list, plot the lot in a single pass, and let the sheet numbers look after themselves. What a sheet set is, and how it differs from a folder of drawings
A set is an ordered list pointing at layouts that live inside several different DWG files. It holds no linework of its own.
That whole list sits in one file with the extension .dst. This is the part most often misunderstood, so it is worth stating plainly: the dst file holds only the list and the paths, not the geometry. Copy it to another machine and leave the DWGs behind and it opens as an empty set of broken sheets.
That file is not readable text either. Opened in Notepad it is nothing but rubbish characters, and it is not XML however many people assume it is.
The real difference from a folder of drawings comes down to three things. A set keeps the sheet order, so sheet numbers mean something. A set plots in one command. And a set feeds sheet number and sheet title straight into the title block, so inserting a drawing changes no title block by hand.
The sheet set manager: where to start it

That ribbon row is why so many people never learn the tool exists. Nowhere on the ribbon is there a button for it. Anyone working from the ribbon alone has almost no way of stumbling across it.

Creating a sheet set, step by step
One thing has to be in place first, and skipping it wastes the effort: every sheet must be a properly named layout inside its DWG. A set points at layouts, not at files. Building layouts is covered in our article on layouts in AutoCAD.

Step 3 decides whether the set survives. The .dst records a path to each DWG. Put it on one drive, leave the drawings on another, then rename a folder one day, and every link breaks at once.
Once the set exists, right-click the set name, choose New Subset, and drag sheets into groups so the list reads as a tree.
The three samples AutoCAD has already installed
This is the part almost no page mentions, and it is the fastest way to learn the tool. AutoCAD 2027 installs three complete sample sets with real drawings behind them:

The Architectural set holds 11 sheets in two subsets: a T-01 title sheet, an Architectural group of six running from AS-01 to A-05, and a Structural group of four from S-01 to S-04. Open any one of those files and a real, fully organised package is there in front of you, which reads faster than any tutorial.
Six variables that decide how a sheet set behaves

The first one is worth testing rather than believing. Close the palette with SHEETSETHIDE and open a blank drawing: the palette stays closed. Open A-01.dwg from the sample set and the palette opens by itself, 270 pixels wide, exactly as in the picture at the top of this article. Two opposite outcomes in the same run, so that is SSMAUTOOPEN at work rather than coincidence.
SSMPOLLTIME at 60 explains a common puzzle: a colleague has just edited a sheet and your palette still shows the old status. It only asks again once a minute.
A sheet list table on the cover sheet
A drawing index is the table of sheet numbers and titles that sits on the cover sheet. Built by hand, every added drawing means editing the whole table again.
Open the cover sheet, right-click the set name on the palette, and choose Insert Sheet List Table. The program builds a table that takes sheet numbers and titles straight from the list.
Two things to know first. Do not type over a cell in that table — typing over one breaks its link and it stops updating. To change the wording, change the sheet title on the palette and the table follows. And the table does not refresh itself: after adding a sheet, right-click the table and choose update.
The sheet number in the title block is a separate mechanism, and the more valuable one. The title block uses a field pointing at a sheet property, so reordering sheets changes the number in the title block without opening a single file. Publishing a sheet set
This is the real reason to build a set in the first place.
Right-click the set name and choose Publish → Publish to Plotter, or Publish to DWF/PDF for a single multi-page PDF. The whole set comes out in one pass, in sheet order.

PUBLISHALLSHEETS at 1 means the Publish dialog arrives preloaded with every sheet. BACKGROUNDPLOT at 0 means plotting blocks the session: on a thirty-sheet set you sit and wait, and setting it to 2 moves plotting into the background.
ETRANSMIT is the command to remember when sending a package out. It wraps the whole set with every referenced file, font and plot style into one archive, so the recipient is missing nothing. References are covered in our article on xrefs in AutoCAD.
What changed in the 2027 release
The What's New page for AutoCAD 2027 gives this tool exactly one sentence: "The Sheet Set Manager palette now allows for multiple sheets to be selected and then the editing of common properties."
From the 2027 release you can select several sheets at once and edit the properties they share. Previously that meant one sheet at a time. On a thirty-sheet set where the same field has to change — client name, issue date — that is a real saving.

What are sheet sets in AutoCAD for?

How big is a .dst file?
