Revit viewer mode ran the software without a licence. You could open a model, look at it, measure it and print drawings, but you could not save. Many offices used it for clients, site supervisors or cost estimators who needed to look at RVT files without another licence.
From Revit 2027, Autodesk has removed this mode completely. This article explains what Viewer Mode could do in earlier releases, why 2027 no longer has it, and three replacements: Autodesk Viewer, Shared Views and IFC files. Newcomers to Revit can start from the Learn Revit course path.
What Revit viewer mode was
According to Autodesk's support pages, Viewer Mode let you open and review models without an active licence. It allowed printing views and sheets if the model had not been changed. You could still make changes, but you could not save them (Autodesk: How to use Revit in Viewer Mode).
Revit's licence status message set out the limits. Viewer Mode allowed all functionality of Revit except four things:
| Not allowed | Note |
|---|---|
| Save, Save As | In all cases |
| Exporting or publishing modified projects | The model has changed during the session |
| Exporting any project to a format containing model data that can be modified | For example formats another program can open and keep editing |
| Printing after changes are made | Printing before any change is allowed |

Up to release 2026, Viewer Mode was started from a separate Revit Viewer shortcut in the Start menu. On a machine without Revit, you installed the trial and then used the Viewer shortcut. For workshared models, Autodesk advised clearing Detach from Central and Create New Local in the Open dialog. Otherwise opening the file already counted as a change and Revit blocked printing.
Revit 2027 removed Viewer Mode
The Revit 2027 What's New page states that Viewer Mode remains available in Revit 2026 and all previous versions, but that starting with Revit 2027 it is removed and no longer supported. Autodesk gives licensing and security risks as the reason (Autodesk: Update to Revit Viewer Mode).
After installing Revit 2027, the Start menu has no Revit Viewer shortcut. The Autodesk folder in the Start menu holds only three items: Revit 2027, Revit Add-Ins Manager 2027 and Worksharing Monitor for Autodesk Revit 2027. Autodesk confirms that creating the shortcut manually does not start Viewer Mode either (Autodesk: Viewer mode is missing in Revit 2027).
This has a practical consequence for offices. Machines that used Revit Viewer to look at files must keep release 2026, or move to one of the replacements below. Files saved in Revit 2027 do not open in Revit 2026.
Why older Revit releases fell into Viewer Mode
Up to release 2026, Revit could switch into Viewer Mode even when started from the normal shortcut. Autodesk names the cause as an expired licence or one not assigned to the account. Autodesk's checks:
- Make sure the machine can reach Autodesk's licensing addresses.
- Check the licence type and assignment in the Autodesk account.
- Start a new Revit session, leaving the old one open, and try to save there.
- Install the latest update.
Students and educators use the free education licence. Signing up is covered in installing Revit free for students; commercial prices are in Revit licence prices.
What to use instead of Revit Viewer
Autodesk recommends Autodesk Viewer, Shared Views or Autodesk Forma. For viewing and commenting on models, the three routes below are the most practical.
| Route | What the viewer needs | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Autodesk Viewer | A browser and a free Autodesk account | Sending an RVT file to someone without Revit for a quick look |
| Shared Views | Only the link | Asking a client for comments on a particular view |
| IFC file | An IFC viewer | Submissions, exchange with other vendors' software |
Autodesk Viewer: view RVT files in a browser
Autodesk Viewer runs in a browser with nothing to install. Its home page says it is free and opens most 2D and 3D formats, including RVT, DWG and DWF. You need an account to upload files.
In Autodesk Viewer, reviewers can orbit, measure, section the model and add markups. They cannot edit the model, so the original file stays safe.
Revit shared views: share one view straight from Revit
Shared Views uploads a visual representation of the open view, not the model itself. Recipients open the link in Autodesk Viewer and comment without needing Revit.
The steps, according to Autodesk's help (Autodesk: Share a View From Revit):
- Open the view you want to share.
- On the Collaborate tab, Share panel, click Shared Views. The Shared Views palette opens on the right; sign in to your Autodesk account if asked.
- Click New Shared View. Revit creates a link to Autodesk Viewer that you can send to reviewers.
Three notes from Autodesk. Creating a shared view requires a Revit subscription. Links expire after 30 days by default and can be extended from the Shared Views palette. Anyone who receives the link can forward it, so share only what may be made public. RFA and RTE files and files on Revit Server are not supported (Autodesk: About Shared Views).
IFC files: an open format for any software
When the recipient uses another vendor's software, or a submission requires it, export the model to IFC. Exporting and choosing the IFC version are covered in exporting IFC from Revit. To combine several models for review and clash detection, use Navisworks; see what Navisworks is used for.
Frequently asked questions
Does Revit 2026 still have Viewer Mode?
Yes. According to Autodesk, Viewer Mode remains in Revit 2026 and all earlier releases. It is removed only from Revit 2027.
Is Revit Viewer free?
Up to release 2026, Viewer Mode ran without a licence. Revit 2027 has no such mode; the free viewing tool Autodesk points to instead is Autodesk Viewer in the browser.
How can I open a Revit file without a licence?
Upload it to Autodesk Viewer with a free Autodesk account, or ask someone with Revit to send a Shared Views link. Anyone who needs to edit the model still needs a Revit licence.
Could you print in Viewer Mode?
Yes, as long as the model had not been changed since it was opened. After a change, Revit blocked printing, exporting and saving.
In short, Revit viewer mode exists only in release 2026 and earlier. From 2027, people who need to look at a model use Autodesk Viewer, people who need to comment use Shared Views, and exchange between programs uses IFC.
