Search Vietnamese job boards for an MEP engineer and the results read like several different professions. One posting wants cooling loads calculated and chillers selected. Another wants someone to run installation crews on site. A third only needs clean Revit models. Same job title, yet the daily work, the software and the route upwards are quite different.
The reason is that building services engineers sit in five different places on a project. This article takes each in turn, counts the requirements in 18 job postings published in 2026, and quotes the practice certificate rules from the legal texts now in force. For the modelling side, the Institute teaches a 15-session Revit MEP course.
What does an MEP engineer do
MEP stands for Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing: air conditioning and ventilation, power and lighting, water supply and drainage. In Vietnam the field is called cơ điện, or M&E. The engineer carries technical responsibility for those systems at one stage of a project: calculating and drawing, modelling, reviewing, installing, or operating.
Fire protection straddles two branches. Fire alarm goes with electrical, water-based firefighting goes with plumbing. Many firms treat it as a separate discipline and write MEPF, with F for fire.
Few people go deep in all three systems. Most specialise in one, following their degree, and job postings name the system outright, such as HVAC design engineer or electrical engineer. What each system contains is covered in What is MEP.
Five seats on a project
The MEP design engineer at a consultant
The work is calculation and drawing: cooling loads, flows, duct and pipe sizes, electrical loads; equipment selection; drawings, design report, specifications and quantities. A good design package is one the contractor can install without coming back with questions.
This seat needs solid theory. All seven design postings in the set of 18 list Revit as a requirement, and this group names the most standards: TCVN, QCVN, ASHRAE, NFPA. The MEP design engineer spends less time on site than the other roles, but still answers queries when construction hits a problem.
The contractor: shop drawings, site, quantities
The contractor takes the design and turns it into something that can be installed. Three roles come up most:
- Shop drawing engineer: detailed installation drawings, coordinated with the structure and the other systems. The process is described in MEP shop drawings.
- Site engineer: organises installation, pressure tests and commissioning, and prepares acceptance and as-built records.
- Quantity surveyor (QS): takes off quantities, orders materials, prepares payment claims.
This side is the least strict about qualifications. Four of the five postings that accept a college diploma are contractor or supervision roles, and one says plainly that it takes graduates with no experience, even those still waiting for their degree. In return, most of these postings pay site, lodging or travel allowances, because the work is on site.
The owner and the supervision consultant
Here the engineer reviews rather than draws: design and shop drawings, material submittals, installation checks, acceptance, and coordination of several contractors at once. One owner-side posting also lists commissioning, handover, and dealing with the power utility and the fire authority.
You cannot review what you have never done. The two owner-side postings that give a figure ask for three and four years, and one requires previous MEP design work on high-rise buildings. The supervision consultant's posting in the set asks for only one year.
Building and factory operations
The operations engineer takes over the systems after handover, plans routine maintenance, responds to faults and carries out minor retrofits. How hard that is depends largely on the as-built records the contractor leaves behind. The operations posting in the set is for an office building owned by a foreign-invested company, and good spoken English is mandatory.
The BIM MEP engineer
Modelling MEP systems, coordinating clashes with architecture and structure, producing drawings from the model, building equipment families. The role exists at consultants, at contractors, at specialist BIM firms, and in developers' in-house BIM teams. The specialist BIM firm's posting takes new graduates; the contractor's model-coordination posting asks for one year.
Engineers still working in 2D can start with the three 2D habits to drop. The next steps on this branch are BIM coordination and BIM management, compared in BIM Manager versus BIM Coordinator.
Degrees and the skills school leaves out
Job postings name degrees quite precisely. Across the 18, refrigeration, HVAC and thermal engineering are named 9 times, a general building services degree 8 times, electrical engineering 7 times and water supply and drainage 5 times. Mechanical engineering, fire protection and civil engineering appear twice each. A single posting often accepts several.
One specialisation trains for this job directly: Hệ thống kỹ thuật trong công trình, literally building technical systems, within the construction engineering (Kỹ thuật xây dựng) major. At Hanoi University of Civil Engineering it is run by the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and leads to a five-year engineer's degree. The programme covers every system in a building: ventilation and air conditioning, water supply and drainage, fire protection, lifts, and lighting and power. That is all three branches of MEP plus the F.
Your degree also decides which system you can later sign for. The MEP design certificate is split into three systems, each tied to a field of study. Electrical systems require electrical engineering. Water supply and drainage requires a degree in building water supply and drainage. Ventilation and thermal systems require ventilation, refrigeration or indoor climate engineering. Eligibility follows the major printed on the diploma; where the diploma does not state one, the transcript must show relevant courses or projects. Decree 212/2026 does not name the building technical systems specialisation, so its graduates rely on the courses and projects for each system shown on their transcript.
Beyond the degree, the postings ask for three things universities rarely teach: reading the other two disciplines' drawings well enough to coordinate, quantity take-off, and English for technical documents.
MEP engineer requirements: what 18 job ads ask for
The set contains 7 design postings, 6 contractor and site supervision postings, 3 owner and operations postings, and 2 dedicated BIM postings.
Five things stand out:
- Revit now matches AutoCAD. Each appears in 14 of the 18 postings. The three that treat Revit only as a plus are contractor, supervision and owner roles; every design and BIM posting requires it.
- The most common task is not calculation. Coordination and clash resolution comes first, then quantity take-off. Design calculation appears in only 5 postings.
- Most ask for two to four years. Five take people with no experience or ask for just one year; two senior roles want seven years or more.
- English goes with senior roles and foreign projects. Four postings require it and two more list it as an advantage.
- None requires a practice certificate. Two list it as preferred, both in supervision and site management. The certificate section below explains why.
Software by seat
| Seat | Listed as required | Listed as a plus |
|---|---|---|
| Design consultant | AutoCAD, Revit; one lighting role adds DiaLux and Relux; the senior coordination role adds Navisworks | BIM, ASHRAE and NFPA standards |
| Contractor, supervision | AutoCAD, MS Office; the graduate posting teaches model coordination in Revit | Revit, Navisworks |
| Owner, operations | AutoCAD | Revit, BIM, Autodesk Construction Cloud |
| BIM | Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, family creation | point clouds, English |
Apart from DiaLux and Relux, no posting names software for cooling load or electrical calculations; calculation skill is described through the tasks instead. A learning path for Revit MEP is set out in learning Revit MEP.
What drives MEP engineer salary
Of the 18 postings, 12 give a salary range and 6 leave it to negotiation, and three state one thing in the header and another in the body. This article gives no figures, because they date quickly. Comparing the ranges with each other shows four factors.
Responsibility counts for more than software. People who search for Revit MEP pay usually want to know what the skill is worth. In this set, the lowest range belongs to a pure modelling role in an in-house BIM team. Design roles that include calculation, at the same experience level, post higher ranges. Revit appears in 14 postings, so it gets you in the door rather than raising your pay.
Site work is paid for. Six postings list site, accommodation or travel allowances. Site and shop drawing roles post ranges equal to or wider than design roles at the same experience, and the ceiling for supervision is high. Model coordination for a factory contractor posts well above the in-house BIM role.
English, foreign projects and long experience. The three highest ranges in the set all require good English: two senior design and coordination roles asking for seven years or more, and one building operations role at a foreign-invested owner. Of the four postings that require English, three are these; the fourth is an HVAC design role that prefers experience on US projects. One contractor also pays a separate language allowance.
The practice certificate. No posting links the certificate to pay. It does, however, decide whether you may sign as design lead or chief supervisor.
Career ladder and the construction practice certificate
The usual ladder runs from engineer to senior engineer or team lead, then discipline design lead, then design manager, MEP project manager or technical director. On the contractor side the path runs through deputy and then site manager.
The construction practice certificate for MEP design and supervision
Since 1 July 2026 the legal basis is Construction Law No. 135/2025/QH15 and Decree 212/2026/ND-CP on capability conditions for construction activities. Decrees 15/2021 and 175/2024 no longer apply.
Who needs one. Article 88 of the Law lists the positions that require a construction practice certificate, including design manager, design lead, design reviewer and construction supervisor. Site managers and project directors need no certificate but must meet capability and experience conditions. Without a certificate you may still do work within your field of study; you simply may not hold those named positions.
The MEP fields. MEP design is split into three systems: electrical; building water supply and drainage; ventilation and thermal. On the supervision side the field is supervision of equipment installation. Design and supervision of telecommunications systems inside buildings need no certificate.
Conditions and scope by grade, under Articles 33, 36 and 37 and Appendix II of the Decree.
| Grade | Experience | Track record (design certificate) | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| III | degree plus 2 years, college diploma plus 3 years | took part in designing 3 projects of class III or above, or 5 of class IV | projects of class III and below |
| II | degree plus 4 years | design manager or lead on 1 class II project or 2 class III projects | projects of class II and below |
| I | degree plus 7 years | design manager or lead on 1 project of class I or above, or 2 class II projects | projects of every class |
The equipment-installation supervision certificate has the same years and the same scope for the chief supervisor role; a supervisor at any grade may work on projects of every class. Grade III supervision requires only participation in supervising, designing or building 1 project of class III or above, or 2 of class IV.
Procedure. The provincial People's Committee issues certificates. Applications are assessed by a review council against the general and experience conditions; the Decree sets no examination. A new certificate is valid for 10 years, and the experience must fall within the last 10 years. Certificates issued under the old law remain valid until they expire.
Something worth doing from your first year: keep your employment contracts, social insurance records and your employer's confirmation for every project you work on. The Decree counts experience from documents of exactly this kind.
In short: choose your seat by the work you want to do every day, learn Revit because almost every seat asks for it, and keep records of each project so that the grade III application is ready once you have the years.
Frequently asked questions
What do MEP engineers study?
The specialisation built for the job is building technical systems (Hệ thống kỹ thuật trong công trình), within the construction engineering major. Employers also accept refrigeration, electrical engineering, water supply and drainage, and mechanical engineering.
Can I work in MEP with a different degree?
You can be hired if the employer accepts your field. Signing as design lead or chief supervisor needs a certificate, and the certificate checks your field against your diploma or transcript.
Does knowing Revit MEP raise my pay?
Not by itself. Revit appears in 14 of 18 postings, so it is an entry condition, and the lowest range in the set is a pure modelling role. Pay rises with responsibility: calculation, coordination, site work, foreign projects.
Should a new graduate join a consultant or a contractor?
Both have postings open to graduates. A consultant builds calculation skills; a contractor builds installation knowledge. The two owner-side postings that state a figure ask for three years or more, so the owner's side is usually a later move.
Does a new graduate need a practice certificate?
No, not until you sign as design manager or design lead, or work as a construction supervisor. Grade III comes at the earliest after two years of experience with a degree, or three with a college diploma.
