A learning path for Revit beginners: what to learn first, and how long until you are employable

A three-stage Revit learning path — four weeks of fundamentals, then a discipline branch, then Families and coordination — with self-study time compared.

Beginners asking "where do I start with Revit" usually get one of three answers: a list of forty videos, a course called "Revit from A to Z", or the advice to "just open it and try". All three miss the thing that matters most: the order. Revit is not hard in any single operation; it is hard because there are so many operations and a beginner cannot tell which one comes first.

This article sets out the three-stage Revit learning path our lecturers use to take somebody who has never opened the software to the point of being usable at a company. Each stage has a measurable goal, there is a table comparing self-study with taught time, and a list of the mistakes that keep people learning forever.

How long does Revit take? Realistic goals at 1, 3 and 6 months

"How long does it take to learn Revit" has no single number, because "knowing Revit" has several levels. The table below shows the levels our students typically reach at eight to ten hours of study a week.

Put simply: three months is the employable mark, six months is the independent mark. Spending less time each week stretches it proportionally, but the order of the stages does not change.

This article is about the order of learning, and it applies whether you study alone or in a class. If you go for a taught course, the Institute's learn Revit page gathers the six courses by branch together with the intakes currently open.

Stage 1 (weeks 1–4): the foundation, the same for every branch

Whether you end up in architecture, structure or MEP, the first four weeks are identical. The goal is to understand how Revit thinks, not to memorise commands.

Week 1 – How Revit sees a building. Project versus Family; Category, Family, Type and Instance; the interface, the Project Browser and Properties. Build the grids and levels — the two things everything else attaches to.

Week 2 – The basic objects. Walls, floors, roofs, doors, windows, stairs. Learn to place an object and edit its properties instead of drawing lines as you would in CAD.

Week 3 – Views and presentation. Plans, sections, elevations, 3D; View Range, Visibility/Graphics, Detail Level. This is what self-taught learners skip, and then cannot understand why "it is in the model but not on the drawing".

Week 4 – Annotation, dimensions, Sheets and a full exercise. Build a complete two or three storey house from a supplied drawing set, place it on Sheets, print to PDF. That output is your evidence of finishing stage 1.

On versions: learn on whatever version the company you are targeting uses, or on a common one (currently Revit 2025–2026). Students and teachers can use Autodesk's free education licence; people already working use a trial or a company licence. You need Windows, at least 16 GB of RAM and a discrete graphics card to work comfortably with real models.

Stage 2 (months 2–3): choose your branch

After the shared foundation, Revit splits into three branches and you should go deep into only one at this stage. Choose by the work you will do, not by which looks easier or more fashionable. Should you learn Revit Architecture, Structure or MEP? has a full decision table; in summary:

The principle of this stage is to rebuild a real project from a complete set of drawings — your graduation project, a set from your office, or the practice set from the class. A real project has all the awkwardness: architecture and structure that disagree, components missing from the library, details that cannot be built from stock objects. That awkwardness teaches more than ten tidy exercises.

At the end of stage 2 you have a complete model and a drawing set issued from it. At most companies that is enough to pass the recruitment test for a BIM technician or junior engineer.

Stage 3 (months 4–6): Families, coordination and issuing documents

This is the stage that separates people who "know Revit" from people who "can use Revit at a company".

Families. The stock library is never enough. Being able to build parametric Families — from doors and equipment to project-specific components — decides how fast you model and how good your schedules are. The Institute splits this into its own Family creation course, 8 sessions, because it is harder and more important than beginners expect.

Several people on one model. Worksharing, Worksets, central and local models; linking the architectural, structural and MEP models; naming conventions and how to split a model. At a company, almost nobody works alone in one file.

Coordination and clash checking. Copy/Monitor between branches, Interference Check inside Revit, and the first steps with Navisworks for combining models and checking clashes across disciplines.

Issuing to a standard. Company templates, presentation standards, quantity schedules usable for estimating, and IFC and DWG exports for partners not using Revit.

Anyone who completes stage 3 and then works for one to two years is a natural candidate for BIM Coordinator; the Institute's BIM Coordinator course starts from exactly that point.

Teaching yourself versus a taught course: time compared

"Can I teach myself Revit?" The answer is yes, but it takes longer and more people give up. The estimates below come from our lecturers' experience with students who had tried self-study before joining a class.

The honest summary: self-study works best at stage 1 and worst at stage 3. Mistakes that stretch out the learning

Treating Revit like AutoCAD. Drawing with Model Lines and Detail Lines instead of placing objects; fixing the drawing instead of fixing the model. A model built that way looks right but cannot be scheduled or coordinated. This is the number one error for people moving from CAD, and the better you are at CAD the easier it is to fall into.

Learning all three branches at once. Architecture, Structure and MEP share a foundation but differ in objects, libraries and how documents are issued. Taking all three at stage 2 means none of them reaches working level.

Watching videos without building one project. Videos teach operations, not how to organise a model. Someone who has watched forty videos still freezes when handed a real drawing set, because they have never had to decide what to build first.

Skipping Views and Sheets. Plenty of people model well but cannot issue a proper drawing set, because they treat presentation as secondary. At a company the deliverable is the drawings, not the model.

Constantly changing version and material. Every change means learning the interface and the library again. Pick one version and one main source, finish the path, then widen out.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn Revit without knowing AutoCAD?

Yes. Nothing in stage 1 requires AutoCAD. In practice you will still meet CAD files from partners and older records, so it is worth picking up the basics at some point — but not before Revit.

Which branch should I choose if I have not decided on a job yet?

Architecture, because it covers the widest range of objects and is the easiest base to move from later. But if you already know you want structural or MEP work, go straight there — the foundation is the same anyway.

Is a certificate at the end worth anything?

It helps at the CV screening stage. What decides the interview is the model and the drawing set you bring, so treat the certificate as a by-product of finishing a real project.

Can I learn Revit on a laptop?

For stages 1 and 2, yes, with 16 GB of RAM and a discrete graphics card. Large coordinated models in stage 3 are uncomfortable on a thin laptop.

How much does the version matter?

Very little for learning, and a lot at work: a Revit file cannot be opened by an earlier release. Learn on any recent version and ask which one your target company uses before you join.
