Many people start learning Revit by looking for a PDF textbook. Most of those files were written for Revit releases that are long out of date, with blurry images that no longer match today's interface.

This page gathers the Institute's free Revit tutorials into one learning path: over 100 step-by-step lessons in Revit 2027, arranged into a shared foundation and three disciplines, Architecture, Structure and MEP. Every lesson has real screenshots and a practice task at the end. For guided learning on a real building, see the Learn Revit course path.

How these Revit tutorials differ from a PDF textbook

There are three real differences.

The first is the release. The lessons are written and captured in Revit 2027 with the English interface. Major changes of recent years, such as Toposolid terrain from 2024 or the new Manage Links dialog, are already covered.

The second is the arrangement. The lessons are split by discipline and follow the order in which a building is modelled, so a structural learner does not have to wade through architectural visualisation, and the other way round.

The third is maintenance. Lessons are updated when the software changes or when readers spot something that is not right, which a published PDF cannot do.

How to use the lessons

  1. Choose your discipline by your job, using should you learn Revit Architecture, Structure or MEP.
  2. Do the shared foundation first, because every discipline uses the same interface, grids, levels and documentation.
  3. Follow your discipline's list from the top. Each lesson ends with a practice task; finish it before moving on.
  4. To see how long each stage takes, read the Revit learning path for beginners.

What each lesson contains

Every lesson follows the same pattern, so you always know where to look. It opens with what the task is for and where it sits in a project. The steps follow, each with a screenshot from Revit 2027 in which the buttons and boxes are numbered and explained in the caption. A practice task on a small model comes next, then a table of what goes wrong and how to fix it, then frequently asked questions. Where a detail should be checked against Autodesk, the lesson links to the matching page of the official help.

A twelve-week plan

Weeks one to four cover the shared foundation: interface, shortcuts, units, templates, grids and levels, and one small model of walls, floors and doors. Weeks five to eight cover modelling in your discipline, one lesson every two or three days, each applied to your own building. Weeks nine and ten cover documentation: sections, dimensions, tags, schedules and sheets. Weeks eleven and twelve cover exchange and coordination: linked models, CAD and PDF export, and for structural learners IFC and central files. Keep the pace steady rather than fast; a lesson you have practised is worth more than three you have read.

Learn Revit effectively on your own

Reading a hundred lessons does not make anyone good at Revit. Skill comes from modelling a real building again and again. Five habits make the lessons more useful.

Pick one small building of your own as a running exercise: a three-storey townhouse, a villa, or a course design project. Apply each lesson to that building straight away, instead of only repeating the example.

Learn keyboard shortcuts from the first week. Experienced users differ from beginners mainly in not hunting for buttons on the ribbon; the table is in Revit keyboard shortcuts 2027.

Read the drawings before modelling. Revit is only fast when the modeller understands the building: which walls carry load, which slabs drop, which pipes run below beams. Those new to drawings should also read how to read structural drawings.

Check your work through documentation, not through the 3D view. An attractive model is not necessarily correct; produce a plan, a section and a schedule, then compare them with the source drawings.

Ask in the right place when stuck. Autodesk's Revit Community forum and the F1 help answer most questions about commands; questions about Vietnamese documentation habits are already addressed in the Institute's lessons.

Common mistakes in Revit self-study

The most common mistake is learning isolated commands from videos, one command per video, and ending up knowing many buttons without being able to model a whole building. The second is skipping project setup: units, templates, grids and levels set wrongly at the start force the whole model to be fixed later. The third is typing text and numbers onto drawings as in AutoCAD, when Revit reads them from the model; tags in Revit explains why tags are better. The last is downloading installers or documents of unknown origin; students have a legal free licence, and learning material should state its software release and author.

Shared foundation for every discipline

Revit Architecture tutorial: 21 lessons

Start with the overview what is Revit Architecture, then follow the table.

Revit Structure: 26 lessons

The opening lesson is what is Revit Structure.

Revit MEP tutorial: 33 lessons

Newcomers to building services should first read what is Revit MEP and the Revit MEP self-study path.

Environmental and water engineering students also have Revit for environmental engineering.

Official Autodesk sources

Alongside the Institute's lessons, use Autodesk's own sources. All of them open straight from Revit's Help menu, the question-mark button at the top right.

1 Help opens the help for the release in use, shortcut F1. 2 What's New? lists what is new in 2027. 3 Essential Skills Videos are short videos on core skills. 4 Revit Community is the question-and-answer forum. 5 Additional Resources collects further learning sources Photo: Screenshot of Revit 2027

The 2027 help lives at help.autodesk.com. Pressing F1 while a command is active opens that command's page directly. The Institute's lessons link to the matching help page whenever a detail needs checking.

Sample files to follow along

Learning Revit without a file to work on makes it hard to remember anything. The Institute offers six free discipline templates in Revit templates. The MEP lessons use the Snowdon Towers sample project that Autodesk ships with the software, as described in Revit MEP sample files. Students and educators use full Revit free of charge, see installing Revit with a student licence.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a PDF version to download?

The Institute does not publish a separate PDF, because lessons are updated for new releases. To read offline, open a lesson in the browser, press Ctrl+P and choose to save as PDF.

Are the lessons free?

Yes. Every lesson and sample file on this page is free.

Can I follow along with a release older than 2027?

Most steps are the same in recent releases. Where 2027 differs from earlier releases, as with Toposolid terrain or the Manage Links dialog, the lesson says so.

How long does it take to learn Revit on my own?

About four weeks for the shared foundation, then two to three months to produce the drawings of one discipline. Details are in the Revit learning path.

Do I need to know AutoCAD before learning Revit?

No. Revit is learned on its own terms: you model elements rather than draw lines, so AutoCAD habits can even get in the way at first. Knowing how to read construction drawings matters far more than knowing AutoCAD commands. If you already use AutoCAD, the article Revit vs AutoCAD explains which habits to leave behind.

Which discipline should a civil engineering student start with?

Structural students usually start with Revit Structure, building services students with Revit MEP, and architecture students with Revit Architecture. Everyone does the shared foundation first.
